PACIFIC GAS AND ELECTRIC CO. (Marin District) Fourth and Streets, San Rafael NEARLY 50,000 MEN AND WOMEN GET JOBS THROUGH STATE EMPLOYMENT BUREAU The Public Employment Bureaus of the State of California came within seven of reaching the maximum positions filled estimate, 50,000 for the first year's work, as made by State Labor Commissioner, John P. McLaughlin, some months ago. The Bureau filled 4,993 positions, or five times more than the estimate made by the legislature which created this department. This immense army of men and women found positions in tho following bureaus; Pan Francisco, Oakland, 7585; tfaiiraniento, 780B: Los Angeles, 15,141.

A comparison of positions filled by months shows; February, 1525; March, 2089; April, 3286; May, 4281; June, 4981; July, 4869; August, 6952; September, 6502; October, 5134; November, 4464; December, 3428; January, 3551. New York State, which has been in the employment business two years with branches in Albany, Buffalo, Brooklyn, Rochester, and Syracuse, for the same period filled only 255S more positions than California, and San Francisco came with 2803 of filling as many positions as the five municipal offices in New York City. California filled 10,162 more positions than Massachusetts during this period, Han Francisco beating Boston by 341 positions. The positions filled by the California bureaus Include all classes of labor, being divided as follows: Agriculture, 4510; building construction, 6019; clerical and professional, 570; factories, 916; foods, beverages and tobacco, 410; hotels, restaurants, camps, clubs, apartment houses, hos pitals and institutions, 6365; lumber and timber trades, 1694; metals and machinery, 1071; mining, quarries and industries, 875; private homes, 3095-transportation and public utilities, wholesale and retail trades, 1555: miscellaneous, 12,462. The positions are divided about equally among skill ed and nonskilled occupations.

About 85 per cent of the people receiving positions were males and 15 per cent females. The average fee paid private ugen cles for Jobs is on this basis tho state has thus far saved employees tlOO.000. or twice as much as the legislature appropriated for two years' maintenance of the bureaus. The employers have been quick to realize the valuable service rendered by the public employment bureaus, having proven to their satisfaction that they are dealing with expert em ployment men who are handling the employment problem on a strict bus iness basis. During the past fiscal year, 10,690 employers patronized the bureaus, 4765 in San Francisco, 1302 in Sacramento; 2831 in Oakland and 1692 in Los Angeles.

Many of these are leading corporations and promt ncnt employers, located in various parts of the state. The bureaus received 27,623 orders for 63,331 employees during this twelve-months period and selected 59,214 men and women to fill the po sitions and about 85 out of every 100 sent to the employers were hired. This beats all records of private agencies. The stute has always on hand a large number of applicants for all classes of positions and through its well-managed system is able to fill or dors on short notice and with efficiency Thus fur 44,461 men and women have applied for work during the following months: February, 5308; March, 3361; April, 3360; May, 3560; June 3988; July, 3658; August, 4493; September, 4244; October, 4006; November, 3110; December, 2438; January, 2745. The success of the public employment bureaus has given Incentive to a number of labor centers to make application for the establishment of free employment bureaus.

The lav is ample to allow the extension of tho service, but the present appropriation will not permit it. However, It is believed that the legislature this year will come to the rescue and make an adequate appropriation. all open minded women and a large at- tendance of guests is expecteu. All welcome. Deputy Marshal Eastman went to the M.

A. Miller home near Yolandu, Friday evening at the call of neighbors, and arrested Mr. Miller for abusing his wife. When he went to the door Mr. Miller came at him with a big knife and said he would kill him, but he finally talked him out of it, and took him to San Rafael where he was kept in the county jail until Tuesday morning, when he was taken before Judge Magee and charged with whipping his wife.

Judge Magee gave him a severe reprimand and suspended sentence during good behavior. An interesting meeting of the Tax-payers Association was held at tho Town Hall Friday evening, and considerable time given to the discussion of the needs of the schools here. Supervisor Thomas says that the schoolrooms at the main school are already over crowded, but that two more pupils were enrolled this week in one room, and that if they keep coming he doesn't know where they can put any more. He suggests that immediate action be taken to get additional grounds, and then, if need be, another small temporary building can be erected to accommodate part of the pupils. But that it would really be a waste of money to do that.

Town Engineer Feusier gave a short talk on the street work and its needs and answered questions which provided much information for those who were not well informed on the question.
