ULI ALAr THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER MONDAY, JANUARY 28, 2002 Obituaries Rev. Charles Mutyaba served as priest in OTR Uganda native worked toward master's at UC By Betsy Stakauskas The Cincinnati Enquirer The Rev. Charles Justus Mutyaba served as assistant pastor at Old St. Mary's Church in Over-the-Rhine only for a short time, but he attracted a crowd of followers. Father Mutyaba was an archdiocesan priest from the Archdiocese of Kampala, Uganda.

He came to Cincinnati in September 2000 to complete his master's degree in social work at the University of Cincinnati. His goal was to go back to Uganda and run Catholic Social Services. He died Saturday from pneumonia at University Hospital. He was 45. From 1992 to 1994, Father Mutyaba served in the new St.

Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Fort Wayne, Ind. Nancy Kenny of Symmes Township met Father Mutyaba there and became good friends with him. "He was filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The fact that he was an African priest in an African-American Fr. Mutyaba community inspired little boys to be priests," Ms.

Kenny said. Father Mutyaba returned to Uganda in 1994 and returned in September 2000. In his role as assistant pastor at Old St. Mary's, he served as mentor to students at St. Peter Claver School, a new all-boys school located at Old St.

Mary's. A memorial Mass will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Old St. Mary's Parish, 123 E. 13th Over-the-Rhine.

Memorials: Old St. Mary's Church, 123 E. 13th Cincinnati 45210. Mary Jane Stineman, 83 was devoted to education By Betsy Stakauskas The Cincinnati Enquirer Mary Jane Lucier Stineman, a devoted educator, volunteer and mother, died Jan. 13 of cancer at VistaCare Hospice in Anderson Township.

She was 83. Mrs. Stineman was a strong believer in education and children, said her daughter Kathy Dittrich of Fairfield, Conn. A native of Abilene, Kansas, Mrs. Stineman earned a scholarship to St.Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana.

After earning a bachelor's degree in education in 1939, she married John Stineman and raised nine children. "Her biggest belief was that education was so important. She wanted to work two jobs to put us all through school," Mrs. Dittrich said. As a stay-at-home mom, Mrs.

Stineman was active in the PTA, the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. In 1955, dismayed at the lack of educational opportunities for children with disabilities, Mrs. Stineman and her husband helped found the Catholic Federation of Retarded Children. She returned to her career choice in 1963, teaching special education at Stowe and Dyer schools downtown. Later she taught special education at Newtown School in Newtown.

At the same time, she took night classes at the University of Cincinnati and in 1967 earned a master's degree in special education. Later, she taught special education at Thomas More College and Edgecliff College. She retired in 1973 and I traveled with her husband to Russia, Australia and Europe. She tutored students in English at Emmanuel Center downtown, was a docent at the Museum of Natural History and the Taft Museum, and was member and substitute organist at St. John Fisher Parish in Newtown.

In 1969, her fellow alumnae from College honored her with the Mother Theodore Guerin Medallion for her contributions to her community and family. She was preceded in death by her husband. Beside Mrs. Dittrich, she is survived by seven sons, John of Mount Washington, Joe of Bronxville, N.Y., Jerry of Hyde Park, Jim of Anderson Township, Bill of Dayton, Thom of Gaithersburg, Md. and Paul of Mount Washington; a daughter, Ann Stineman of Evanston, 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services have been held. Burial was at Guardian Angels Church Cemetery in Mount Washington. Memorials: College, P.O. Box 70, St. Mary of the Woods, Ind.

47876. Writers to talk about race in series at UC By Denise Smith Amos The Cincinnati Enquirer The University of Cincinnati's Department of English invites the public to its series called "Ropes, featuring prominent writers who lecture and participate in public dialogues. Stanley Corkin, a UC English professor, said the April riots and the Sept. 11 attacks gave him the theme for Ropes this year. "Race is not simply a category defined by black and white.

The series will look at the term in all its varieties," he said. For instance, Caryl Phillips is a Caribbean-born novelist, raised in England, who has written about the African slave trade. Noel Ignatiev, a fellow at Harvard University, will discuss the social consequences of the "category of whiteness." Bharati Mukherjee and Suvir Kaul are writers of South Asian background. Services for Ms. Oberhausen will be held this week in her hometown of Somerset, Ohio, said her father, Paul Oberhauser, 65.
