This does not in any sense indicate a change in the trend of retail sales. RETAIL SALES IS INDEX "The movement ot cars at retail Is, after all, the only real index to the position of the industry. The last quarter of the year is always low from a production standpoint because of the custom of readjusting plants and equipment incident to the revision of models fcr the new year. "General Motors retail sales during the last quarter of 1929, so far us can be estimated at this writing, somewhat exceeded the corresponding quarter of 1928. Furthermore, although complete figures are not available at this writing, our total retail sales for 1929 were practically the same as our- per formance of'1928.
