Meeting for the first time since appropriation for its labors had been made by Congress, the commission undertook in executive session a study of whether and how the remaining public lands might be turned over to the eleven states within which they lie. Springfield police officers enacted a "ghost" scene to force Harry Ross to confess to the slaying of John Babcock, caused Judge Charles G. Briggle to quash the murder Indictment against Ross. Briggle ruled that a "confession" signed by Ross after police had questioned him for six days and had frightened him! by materializing Babcock's "ghost" in the room where Babcock was killed, was not made voluntarily. Ross was accused of beating Babcock, a former business associate, with an ax handle, killing him, and hauling the body in a barrel to a field near Florence, Ill. The defendant was arrested at Hannibal, Mo.

Hollister Pioneer Is Called by Death HOLLISTER, June 4. Mrs. Catherine Murphy, 76, one of San Benito county's pioneers, died at her home here after several years' illness, being laid to rest in Calvary cemetery today, following requiem high mass in Sacred Heart church. She was the widow of EdMurphy, Cienega pioneer rancher. Migrating from Ireland 1865, her family crossed the Isthmus of Panama and settled in San Juan, near here, a year later.

She was the mother of Sister Barbara, Kansas City, Mrs. Walter Winder of Fallon, Mrs. William T. Burke and Joseph P. Murphy, both of Hollister; Dr.

Frank Murphy of St. Louis, and William E. Murphy of San Pedro. Repair Bid Made By Deep-Sea Diver SANTA CRUZ, June one bid from a -sea diving company was received by the city council for the repair of the outlet of the Santa Cruz sewer system. Herring recently led Dyer on a sensational chase through Menlo Park and Palo Alto at 60 miles an hour, stopping only when the latter fired a revolver shot into the air.
