HOLLYWOOD, AUGUST 31. CINCINNATI'S Tyrone Tower Is presently before the cameras at Twentieth Century-Fox In "The Californian," which Is probably his toughest screen role to date. It's tough, not because the entire story hangs on the swashbuckling verve that Ty can dish up so easily, but because It Is a remake of "The Mark of Zorro," which was one of the lata Doug Falrbanks's most successful films. Power realizes the Job he's got to do on this one. Vn i BEING GROOMED FOR STARDOM is Uila Ern.t.

nbove, Cincinnati drbutanle of two ycnr back. Left to right, the tudio (nmernnmn has snapped Miss Ernst at work and at play. She uses the telephone in her forthcoming comedy, "Henry and Dizzy," an Aldrith family number. Skating; and tennis warm her tootsies so that the publicity man requires her to pose as she cools them before an open window. h( vy ffctched from Broadway to Holly' wood.

We were sitting In a Paramount executive office when Leila put in her first appearance In Holly wood several months ago. The ex- icutlve started rlfiht off by suggesting that perhaps Leila Ernst wasn't a good enough name for a movie stnr. At this Leila exploded "Nuts," she yelled, jumping up, what do you want to call me--Lovey Honeybee? Or maybe" Just a minute, said the man behind the polished mahogany "Right now we won't decide." He mopped his brow as Leila accepted our invitation to have her first look at her own studio. I-iella spotted a bicycle and sug Rested that your correspondent; pump her about the lot on "Not very dignified," she "but we'll cover the ground faster." Whereupon we (puff) visited all the sound stages In quick succession. Such genuine enthusiasm we have never beheld.

No blase, phony attitude with this girl. She was Impressed with the moviemaker's magic. "Gowh," she shouted, "Isn't this exciting?" Leila made her debut In Cincinnati In 1938 and was educated In Europe. But she passes off the rltzy European schools, saying, "I'd probably been better off In a school right hera at home." Just now this blue-eyed stick of dyamita with the honey-colored hair is pbying wummer stock in the New England straw hat circuit. Be fore leaving he completed her first picture, "Henry and Dizzy," In which she co-stars with Jackie Cooper.

Her director on that picture, Ted Reed, says Leila has more Inherent talent than any other young actress he has seen In Holly wood for 10 years. The studio is already planning her next picture. But before ahe does another chore before the cameras she'll open in Now Yoik early In September In Rogers's and Hart's new musical, Pal staged by George Ab bott. Leila was uneasy about Holly wood and Its ways her first several 4. jiK TYRONE POWER is shown at the right as he appears in his latest picture, to be premiered here in December.

The gentleman with him is John S. Truesdell, who now covers Vine Street in Hollywood for The Enquirer. Truesdell got the picture of the Orpheum staff from Ty. The artist has encircled the star so you'll know how he used to look. We'd be interested to learn the names and current occupations of Power's colleagues in the photograph.

Only Paramount will call her "The Blonde Fireball." Leila isn't taking all this success too big. With uaual vitality and lack of dignity, she merely yells, "Man am I lucky!" MICKEY'S STUNTS.

During a luncheon Mickey Rooney was called upon to entertain, and pulled a new one from his bag of tricks. After huddling In a corner for a moment with Sidney Miller, his song-writing partner, he came up with three new Impersonations. followed by a "Day at a Tennis Match," and "A Day at a Baseball Game." But on this picture I've had -my way.

I'll be back In Cincinnati for the world premiere In the latter part of December." He grinned. "I hope they like It back there." The trip to Cincinnati will be a family Junket with his wife, Anna-bella, and his mother. There Is a possibility that his grandmother, Mrs. Adelaide Reaume, and Ty's uncle, Charles Reaume, will be on th trip as well. Power hasn't been around his home town for about three years and is looking forward to seeing all his friends and mooning around his old hangouts near the family home at 2112 Fulton Avenue.

"There's one fellow I don't want to mine whila I'm back. I saw him on my last trip three years ago. I'd gone with tha Kox exchange manager to the Palace Theater to sea an advance showing of one or two pictures. After it was over, a head popped out of ths projection booth and yelled, 'Hey, kid, fetch ma up some lea water and make it Tha projcctlonlat was tht same fellow I used to tote, gallons of water to when I was ushering at the Orpheum. He told me that every time he screened a picture I was In ha half expected me to bounce off tha screen and lug Ice water up to his projection booth." Kdltnr's note; Man's name Is Max Tull.) Another chore that Ty used to do at the Orpheum provided him during his last visit to Cincinnati with his biggest thrill.

"You don't know what it means lo an usher to work all day and then, when tha bill changes, have to stay after the last show and help change the marquee. Well, going down to tha Orpheum and seeing that marquee changed with my name going up in lights was thu blccest kick I've ever hnd. Not because It was my name that the bulba were spelling, but there was a marquee being changed and I didn't have to do it!" Tvrone and his wife, Annabella, are easily the best-looking couple In Hollywood, but their night club annearances are not irequeni Among their good friends are the Jack Bennys, the Bob Taylors, and others in the saner social set. Ty has only two superstitions. He'il never close his dressing room rlnnr.

If ha wasn't an actor, he believes ha would be a writer "Writers," he tells you with high Inaccuracy, "lead a wonderful Cincinnati Fireball Paramount executives are doing raves over the Cincinnati debbie, Leila Ernst. "She has everything It takes to maka screen star," they tell you. "Beauty, ability, personality, but above all vitality." Leila's personality Is a cross between Carole Lombard and a stick of dynamite.

When something pleases her, aha yells, but she gives out a groan when she's displeased. Her career began when aha waa signed by George Abbott for his Broadway stage show, "Too Many Girls." As Abbott puts it, Para- mount's signing- of this girl is just another proof of his amazing eye for picking winners. But thats not the way Leila told it to us. She had been trying to get an audition with Abbott for months, and it couldn't be arranged. So with typical gusto, Leila flung herself into the theater where the Great Glorifier" was holding a dence audition.
