Beginning June 25, WBTI will broadcast only Vi hours of free religious programming each weekday, eliminating its regular schedule of 6 '4 hours of old reruns like "F-Troop," "Batman," and vintage movies, Jim Casey, general manager of both WBTI and ONTV, said Thursday. THE STATION will eliminate all seven hours of free Saturday morning broadcasting.

On Sundays, there will be three hours of free religious programming, starting at 8 a.m., Casey said. ONTV, the subscription television service which operates In conjunction with WBTI, will take over the once-free alrtime. ONTV operates on Channel 3, and is available only to subscribers who rent a decoder box to receive the scrambled signal, primarily of recent movies. In another economy measure, the station this week lald-off 15 employees 9 from WBTI and 6 from ONTV. Most were operating engineers, transmitter technicians and producers.

WBTI now has 14 employees. Casey said ONTV subscriptions have dropped from 40,000 to 30,000. But a WBTI management-level employee, who asked not to be Identified, said subscriptions are closer to 19,000. The employee said the growth of Warner Amex has been devastating to ONTV, forcing officials to shift more of WBTI's regular broadcast time to ONTV. "THAT'S WHAT has killed us," the employee said.

Casey said the switch meant the station didn't need as many employees. He also said the satellite service can buy more movies at cheaper rates, thus enabling ON-TV to hold its subscription price.
