of F. September 12, 1948 THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Section 4-Page Arsonists Use Radiowave? They're Quite A Problem BY FRANK CAREY Kenneth Norton, one of the (AP Science Reporter) Washington, Sept. 11-With development of superpowerful and superhigh frequency radio waves, fears have been expressed that arsonists might plant combustibles and then fire them by radio. The radio wave theory was advanced at one time as cause of a series of "phantom" farm fires near dropped Macomb, when Ill. a The confession theory was obtained that the fires were set with ordinary matches.

For example, says he, a powerful station would have to be within 20 feet for the waves to burn a piece of paperand you'd also have to have some means of focussing your waves.

Igniting of materials by random radio waves, or by ones that someone might attempt to aim at a distant spot is just inconceivable, he that is, let you're thinking of the direct heat from radio waves. And unlike tains no skin the soft, smooth lovely hands FON, use it for dishes AND would be relatively easy to cause a fire if you had A radio receiver on the premises, tuned to a faraway transmitter. Such a receiver, he said, might rigged to create a spark or otherwise "trigger" some mechanism. Here's the drawback to utilizing radio energy as 8 direct heating source at long range: Radiowaves so off in all directions and in ever-widening circles when they are transmitted like ripples on a pond when you drop a stone in it. Thus, the original energy is distributed over an widening area as the wave travels, through space. So, the energy of a given section of a wave decreases according to the distance it travels.

For example, says Norton, take a wave transmitted at 10,000,000 watts believed to be the most powerful wave yet At only a mile from the transmitter, the energy would be so distributed that the wave would have a power of only of a watt the square foot of area it passed through. "Such heat energy wouldn't be enough to start a he said. Norton explained by of special antenna, it is possible to "beam" a radiowave in somewhat the same fashion a searchlight is beamed. But even so, the wave spreads out considerably as it passes through space, so that its energy is distributed over a wide area. (Radar waves are special "pulse" forms radiowaves, and they are "beamed" a searchlight.

But of, when they travel only a few miles, their original energy is distributed over a relatively wide area, so that the energy is not focused at a particular spot.) Norton says that radiowaves of short waves--are better sources than are frequency "long" waves, the kind most generally used in commercial broadcasting. This is because the shorter waves are absorbed better by small objects. But, whether you have A short wave or A long wave, the original broadcasting power and the distance traveled are the factors to be contended with as far as concentrating heat energy is concerned. Radiowaves are in use for heating purposes. Methods have been developed for frying and cooking other foods in eggs coils through which radiowaves a are "piped." But in these methods, the waves are kept from spreading abroad.

The energy is concentrated right at the source. Experiments are under way on using radar waves as heat sources in medical treatment. Norton says "possibilities are unlimited," however, for starting fires by remote control, it the proper equipment were used, "I believe it would be possible." he says, "to set transmitter in Australia, then up come a this country and set up a receiver equipped to "trigger" a mechanism that would cause combustible materials to flame." Farmers Dissatisfied With Progress Of UN Des Moines, Iowa, Sept. 11- (UP)-More than 50 per cent of American farmers are dissatisfied with the progress the United Nations has made to date, according to a survey by Successful Farming Magazine. Only 1 per cent of all farmers showed the isolationist attitude with disapproval of the basic idea of the UN. The change the greatest number of farmers would like to see made is to give the UN more and political force.

One Kansas man would like to see "any change that conferred more authority than merely advisory." A woman from Virginia commented: "I would like to see it rearranged so that one power couldn't interfere with wishes of the whole." The 18 per cent who are satisfied with the progress the UN has made take a more optimistic view of the situation. A man from Kentucky spoke for most of the 18. per cent when he said: "You have to crawl before you walk--it takes time to work out the present problems."
