It September 12, 1948 THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER News A $72,000 Tom Collins! Imported Gin, 13.200 Fifths Of It, Will Be Poured On Dump--Tax Unpaid. The cluttered Gest Street dump Is due to be doused with $72,600 worth of high grade gin Tuesday Decause owners cannot swing with U. S. Customs officials to give it away. Approximately 13,200 fifths of the liquor is doomed to be "busted" by a bulldozer under the supervision of Federal customs inspectors unless a last-minute agreement is reached.

The owner, the Lexington Distr tributing Lexington, is willing to give the gin away to hospitals for medicinal purposes or to other institutions which could it for non-drinking purposes. could be given away cost free only if customs officers agree to relinquish tax claims on it. However, Ed President L. Werthheimer, brokers for the owner, said the Federal men will not allow such an arrangement. He explained that under Federal law Uncle Sam is entitled to taxes and custom duty totaling $27.60 a case on imported liquor.

And, in this instance he wants just a case. Wertheimer said that the situation came about in this manner. Early in 1945 the comthe Cuba ande placed pany namported a lot of it in the Cincinnati Terminal Warehouse under Federal bond. That meant that before A case could be taken out, the $27.60 had to be paid to the Government. Subsequently 900 cases were sold through normal channels.

However, since the end of the war domestic distillers resumed gin production to the point where they can sell their product, tax included, at less than $27.60 a case. Consequently, no buyers could be found to take the imported goods, even though the owner offered to give it away for just the of what is due the government. bonding cont, period on the cases would be up November 1 and the owner would have to pay the tax regardless of whether he could sell the gin or not. This being uneconomical, it was decided to dump it. Michael C.

ERP Aid Is Enough To "Keep Us Going," British Leader Says London, Sept, 11-(AP)-Britain's share of aid from the European Recovery Program for the first year will enable it to "keep going," a Treasury spokesman said tonight. He told reporters that the 000,000 allocated to Britain by the Council of European Economic Cooperation was slightly under expectations, but that the Treasury felt it will cover the most essential needs. "We shall not be able to relax, we shall not be able to make luxury purchases and our export and production program will have to be pushed to the utmost," the spokesman said.

"With manufacturing already 25 per cent above prewar levels, we can regard the British recovery effort with a degree of satisfaction, and the new aid should enable us to keep going."
