WALKER JOHNSON will help lead top-rated Enquirer Photo BY DICK SWAIM Mt. Healthy against No. 2 Oak Hills tonight. Owls, Oak Hills Battle For Poll, League Lead BY TOM GROESCHEN Enquirer Reporter Hep Cronin figures he may have to equip his Oak Hills basketball team with lassos for tonight's pivotal Hamilton County American League game at Mount Healthy. Cronin says the game, a match of the city's two top teams in the No.

1 Owls and No. 2 Highlanders, will be a supreme test for his players. "We've got to control the tempo," said Cronin. "They're so much quicker, they can run and jump higher. If let them get away from us early, it could be a long night." Oak Hills, 7-1 overall, is tied with the Owls for first place in the HCAL.

Both 5-0 league records. Mount Healthy is Cincinnati's only undefeated boys' team -at 10-0. OWLS' COACH John Grunkemeyer would like to kick his running game into gear as usual, but believes the task will be tough against Oak Hills. The Highlanders have surrendered an average of 49 points per game this season, lowest in Cincinnati. "I don't ever relish the thought of playing Oak Hills," said Grunkemeyer.

"Controlling their big kids will be important. I think we match up fairly well." Cronin doesn't exactly agree. "We're not a super basketball team, and should be the underdog," he said. happy to be where we are, but there's no doubt which team has more talent in this game." Among those who have served Mount Healthy with distinction are 6-3 junior forward Darren Davenport, 6-3 junior center Ron Benford, and 5-11 senior guard Pat Johnson. DAVENPORT HAS been the best allaround performer at 13.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.

Benford leads the club with averages of 16.4 points and 11.1 rebounds. Floor leader Johnson is averaging 5.1 assists. Oak Hills is led by 6-1 junior guard Don 16.4-point average. Husky 6-3, 195- pound senior Kevin Dooley is a force inside with a scoring average of 14.3 and a rebounding norm of 10.1. "We'll be playing this game for a lot of things," said Grunkemeyer.

"We'd like to stay No. 1 in the league and the city, and we'd also like to stay in the Top 10 in the state." Mount Healthy is ranked No. 6 in the Ohio Class AAA poll. THE WALLS will also be rattling tonight at Taft, where the Senators host Western Hills in a skirmish for first place in the Public High School League. West Hi, ranked No.

4 in the city, leads the league with 6-0 record. The Mustangs are 9-1 overall, nine straight victories. Taft, 5-1 in the PHSL and 6-1 overall, suffered its only loss to WestHi, 68- 56, on Nov. 30. The Senators have won six in a row and are seventh in the most recent city poll.

Taft's 6-9, 205-pound senior center Kannard Johnson, Cincinnati's top college prospect, was held to just 16 points by the Mustangs in his worst game of the season. Johnson has been unstoppable since, as his 31.9-point, 18.8-rebound average will attest. "He's the best I've seen in nine years here," said Redmond. "He's better than LaSalle Thompson, better than Joe Gampfer, better than Dan Federmann. Everyone either double- or him, and he's still shooting from the floor." JOHNSON IS unquestionably the big factor in the game, but West Hi coach Joe McNeil feels confident in sending 6-8 Gault against Kannard.

"Gault can't handle Kannard by himself, but I doubt if anyone could," said McNeil. "I don't think a UC player could guard him one-on-one. For us, our help defense on Johnson will be important. We must limit the number of times he gets the ball. They have some good wing shooters too, so we can't just concentrate on Kannard." Two Moeller Stars Narrow College Picks BY MICHAEL PAOLERCIO Enquirer Reporter Moeller football players Hiawatha Francisco and Shane Bullough were surprised by their recent selection to the prestigious Parade High School AllAmerica team.

"It was a big shock," said Francisco, Moeller's all-time rushing leader. "I did not think I would do that well, considering I had missed just about two games and the injuries I had. Plus, I generally did not play a full game." "I was thinking about it, but I was not expecting it," said Bullough, a linebacker. "Something on a nationwide basis like that takes a lot of luck. It's a great honor." THE PAIR, two of four players selected from Ohio, gave Cincinnati 10 Parade allAmerican selections over the last three years.

The other Ohioans picked were running back Tony Cooper of Circleville and wide receiver Nate Harris of Akron Central Hower. The Player of the Year was Alvin Miller, a wide receiver from Kirkwood High School in Missouri. Francisco and Bullough have narrowed their college selection to the five schools they are permitted to visit in the upcoming weeks. Francisco has visited Michigan. His other selections include Dame, North Carolina, Pitt and either Georgia or Arizona.

Bullough, who has already visited Penn State, will be taking other trips to Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan and Georgia. "For awhile it was very hectic. The hardest part of it all is learning to say no. You're not in this to please the recruiters and you find that hard to do to schools that come here to see you." Bullough has blocked off each weekend in January for his remaining trips and expects to make a decision in time for the national signing date on Feb. 8. Francisco Isn't quite sure he'll have his decision made by that time.

He's projecting it will most likely be made by March. "I'd like to go away for a while and think about it before I make a decision," he said. He indicated that he plans to consult with "a neutral person" before he makes his final selection. Bauman Is Likely Choice To Replace Retiring Kerin David Harcum, superintendent of the Greenhills-Forest Park city school district, said Thursday that he will recommend Larry Bauman to replace the retiring Dick Kerin as head football coach at Greenhills High School. Bauman is currently an assistant coach at Greenhills.

He was previously head coach at Little Miami, and also served as an assistant at Deer Park and North College Hill. Kerin announced his retirement Wednesday, after 34 years of coaching. He had been at Greenhills since 1971. Harcum said his recommendation of Bauman would be acted upon at the district's regular school board meeting on Jan. 24.
