Clergy Keeps Faith of Fighters Individuals may obtain up to 25 pounds of sugar apiece for home canning and freezing of this season's fruit 'crop on and after May 15 and this limit may include up to five pounds of sugar apiece for jams jellies and preserves 0 A announced Monday The sugar for home canning will be allotted on substantially the same basis as last Is one pounds for each four quarts (or eight pounds) of the finished product Although "home canned" foods include primarily those that the housewife puts up in her kitchen for the use of her family anyone who contributes the ingredients or the equipment or part of the labor required for home canning operations may consume the food produced without surrendering ration points "These provisions" said Administrator Prentiss Brown "are in keeping with my preliminary announcement that 0 A would make enough sugar available so that housewives can take the fullest advantage of the new fruit Crop and provide their tables with generous home-canned supplies of these important foods Use nations Sparingly The more fruit and vegetables put up at home the less demand there will be on the limited civilian supply of commercially packed foods I earnestly appeal to those who home-c'an fruits and vegetables to use their processed foods rations sparingly It must be remembered that millions of war workers and others in essential industries have neither the time or the facilities to put up fruits and vegetables at home They must depend entirely on commercially packed foods Every can of the commercial pack that is saved for these folks through home canning is a direct and important contribution to our war effort We can run the total into hundreds of millions of cans Let's do it" Local boards will receive written applications under the new provisions on and after May 15 No special form is required unless it is planned to sell the home product and application may be made in person or by mail The applicant must furnish the following: 1 A copy of war ration book No 1 for each person for whom home canning sugar is sought 2 The total number of quarts eNr pounds of finished fruit to be put up 3 The amount of sugar -to be tsed for making jams and jellies (not more than five pounds per person) within the 25-pound maximum The board will record the number of pounds of sugar granted each person on the cover of his or her war ration book No 1 Various Denominations Home canning sugar allotments under the new program will be in the form of "sugar allowance coupons" in denominations of 1 3 5 and 10 pounds Housewives thus can spread their sugar buying over the entire canning season Each sugar allowance coupon will be marked with the serial number of war ration book No 1 and the book itself must be presented to the retailer for checking when-(Continued on Page Twenty-four) Tribune Intermountain Wire PROVO May motion to draw up new relief budgets on a basis of "need" and taking into consideration higher costs of living arther than follow Governor Herbert Maws more liberal recommendations was adopted by the Utah county welfare board Monday night following a three-hour discussion The action was taken after a motion to co perate fully in Governor Maw's proposed program failed to carry as members of the welfare board held to their previous stand that old age assistance cases should be investigated with budgets made according to needs In accordance with this motion the welfare board will draw up the new budgets in accordance with bulletin No 209 issued by the state welfare department with increases varying in individual cases The budgets to go into effect this month will include increases of approximately 25 per cent according to William Callahan director of the welfare department Too Stringent The other bulletin form No 221 carrying recommendations from Governor Maw for a minimum mixed budget sum for various items was believed by the board members to be too stringent with no leeway for adjustment Governor Maw attended the meeting and explained the aims of his prcgram pointing out that with his rew system of rehabilitation relief clients would be taken off the rolls and costs would go down The governor declared the present program is built on the wrong rules and regulations with the incentive for work taken away from the relief clients and their families as all income is deducted from relief checks He urged the board members to face the issue as to how much it should cost to live decently and make the budgets liberal enough and with greater unity All persons should be given the same amount for housing recreation etc but if they choose to spend their allotted amount for recreation to buy bonds or to even buy "whisky" that should be their privilege after they are 65 he contended Liberal budgets should be set up with all persons given as much assistance proportionately as the state and county can afford to pay and then allowed to earn the balance he maintained Backs Governor Following the governor's address Philo Wightman of Payson made the motion to cooperate In the governor's program but Mrs' Monroe Paxman of Provo dissented and offered the new motion to base the new budgets an "need" Other members of the board in attendance Chairman Wm Johnson of Spanish Fork A Lowe of Orem Mrs Weight of Provo Miller of American Fork concurred with Mrs Paxman All members of the board concurred with Governor Maw in provisions being made in the program to allow clients to receive additional income from other sources on a higher budget to encourage employment Much rehabilitation has already been done in Utah county they contended however ALLIED HEADQUARTERS IN NORTH AFRICA May 10 efficiency and coordination of American airmen
