2 Foifbanki Thursday, Feb. 2, -a. Nome's Little Route 97 May Stretch Someday Ambitious Plans for Alaskan Roads Include Tourist Camps By VAL GREUEL Traveling Americans may in the foreseeable future be able to catch a glimpse of the Siberian coastline without leaving their family auto by staying on Route 97. This number has been given the existing highway links between the United States and Livengood, Alaska. And, optimistically, the same be applied to the short little road winding out of Nome as it stretches farther southward into mining areas.

Long-range hopes expressed at a recent meeting of the territorial board of road commissioners are for a continuous road from Alaska's Seward peninsula to Cape Horn in South America. Official designation of the Alaska highway from the border to Buffalo Center, the Richardson highway from Buffalo Center to Fairbanks, the Steese highway from Fairbanks to Fox, and the Elliott highway from Fox to Livengood as Route U. S. 97 follows on the heels of a similar Canadian designation on the Alaska highway under their jurisdiction as Canada Route 97. Action by the Alaska board was taken at a recent meeting during which the 1956 roads program for the territory was formulated.

To Hot Springs It includes: a full program of construction on a road from Fairbanks to Chena Hot Springs, start of a road link between Livengood and Eureka-Rampart, expenditure of more than $100,000 through the territorial highway engineer's office for extensions and improvements of access and feeder roads, roadside tourist recreation and rest camps to be built by the territorial highway engineer, and road markers and directional signs to be erected. The start of a road link this year between LJvengood and Eureka-Rampart is, in actuality, the first step toward a link with Nome from interior Alaska and completion of a continental overland crossing. New Perry Other major action taken 'by the board of road commissioners included authorization for construction of a new ferry for the Tee Harbor-Port Chilkoot-Skagway run with long-range plans for another boat of comparable design on the Ketchikan-Wrangell-Petersburg run in 1957. The old Chilkoot will be repaired, if possible, for standby service, the board decided, until the new ferry is placed in service. A possible ferry between Ketchikan and Metlakatla was also considered.

Funds for this construction and repair work will be borrowed from the territory's general fund under a law passed by the last' legislature, according to G. A. (Al) Seeliger, Fourth division; board member. The highway engineer was appointed a committee-of-one to confer with territorial Police Superintendent A. P.

(Bob) Brandt for erection and maintenance of speed limit and other signs on public roads. Taxes Split A continued policy of splitting up motor fuel tax funds was agreed upon with a slight increase voted for road maintenance money to the Alaska road commission. They will receive $300,000 instead of $250,000 as before on a cooperative agreement with the federal agency. From total funds received there is first to be taken (1) ARC cooperative road repair money; (2) money set aside for operating truck weighing scales and (3) money set aside by the legislature for operations of the highway engineers office. Of the balance, the board decided 50 per cent would be placed on trunk line roads to be distributed throughout the four judicial divisions, alth.ough the designation "trunk line road" will not be applied through municipal corporations during the 1956 construction season or until further clarification by the next Alaska legislature.

The Juneau- Haines ferry is to be called a "trunk line road."
