Top-seeded Mats Wilander, who has won more Grand Prix tournaments than any other player this year, downed fellow-Swede Joakim Nystrom, 6-3, 7-5, to reach the third round of the $315,000 Stockholm Open-Scandinavian Tennis Championships. No other seeded players played Tuesday. Stovall: I Don't Feel Insecure Louisiana State football coach Jerry Stovall said he doesn't feel insecure in his job amid persistent speculation that he may be fired. In response to a question, Stovall, who has a year left on his contract, said he expects to be coaching the Tigers in 1984. Stovall met with LSU Athletic Director Bob Brodhead on Monday, but said they didn't talk about his future or the Tigers' disappointing 3-5 record.

Asked if Brodhead has told him he would be fired after the season, Stovall said: "He has not indicated that to me." O'Brien pleaded innocent in New York to charges of assaulting three men during a brawl at a Manhattan discotheque. Attorney Peter Morrison entered the pleas on behalf of the two National Football League players in Manhattan Criminal Court after charges of third-degree assault were formally filed.

The two were released on their own recognizance by Judge Randall Eng, who excused them from appearing in court Dec. 15, when motions are to be filed. The players had no comment as they left the courtroom. Gastineau, 26, of Huntington, N.Y., and O'Brien, 22, of Long Beach, N.Y., are charged with "recklessly" assaulting John Benson, Charles McGinley and Peter Fernandez at Studio 54 on Sept. 30.

The players are accused of breaking the noses of Benson, 21, of New York City, and Fernandez, 18, of Jersey City, N.J., by "kicking and punching" them. Studio 54 employees said the brawl began after Gastineau lost an arm-wrestling match to the club's bartender. Churchill Results FROM ENQUIRER WIRES Former Green Bay Packer and Notre Dame football coach Dan Devine says he may apply for the Big Ten coaching post at Minnesota. Joe Salem has resigned, effective at the end of the season. "At this point I don't want to say anything," Devine said from Phoenix, Ariz.

"I'm not saying I won't apply, if you want to read it that way." Devine, 58, was called by Minnesota Athletic Director Paul Giel last week. "I appreciated Paul calling and we had a very beneficial conversation," Devine said. Devine is a native of Proctor, and went to high school in Duluth. He also coached at Missouri and Arizona State, where he still works raising money and broadcasting football games. Pryor No No For 'Boom Boom' Retired boxer Alexis Arguello, who has fought both men, said he doesn't think Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini should fight Aaron Pryor.

Arguello was in Youngstown Mancini's hometown to help promote next week's closed-circuit telecast of the match between Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler. He said he thought a match between the two Ohio fighters could potentially Jeopardize Mancini's career. He said he didn't think that was worth it to Mancini, the World Boxing Association lightweight champion, even for a $5 million payday. Pryor is a junior welterweight. Arguello said he hopes that Mancini's manager, Dave Wolf, "never accepts this fight." Arguello is the only boxer to beat Mancini as a pro, stopping him in the 14th round of their bout in October of 1981.

Arguello lost twice to Pryor and retired after their last match, in September. "Whoever doesn't get (Rich) Gossage (of the New York Yankees) is going to want Tekulve," said Reich, who is also representing Pirates' outfielder Dave Parker in the draft. Voss of Tacoma, won a rare two-frame roll-off from Pete McCordirk after both tied at 176 to capture the top prize in the $100,000 Professional Bowlers Association Greater Detroit Open.

Voss, 25, earned $13,000 for the victory, his first on the tour. Five-time Wimbledon champion Bjorn Borg answers the question as quickly and easily now as he did seven months ago when he shocked even his wife by announcing his retirement from competitive tennis. Borg never has regretted his decision and plans to return only occasionally to competition such as today when he begins play with partner Bettina Bunge in the $400,000 World Mixed Doubles Championships. "I've never gotten the itch to come back," Borg said. "To tell you the truth, it's not tough at all not getting up and practicing four hours per day.
