of Telecredit Inc a Los Angeles based compu terized check verification ser vice Ault says this is several times the losses from bank robberies the BART station to offer one day brake and other services to the busy commuter who can leave his car with George in the morning and pick it up the same day after work been allocated for the electric underground portion of this project by PG and other utilities and the South En trance Assessment District After a long wait Pinole is ready to launch its Pinole Valley Road project The underground conver sion $1 million more than last year The projects are designated by local city coun cils or boards of supervisor following public hearings In a 6 year period the total bud geted throughout Northern and Central California now amount to $56 million Over the past five years PG and E's local gas depart ment has installed or re placed nearly 59 miles of dis tribution pipeline in the Rich mond area And according to Stanley PG and expects to be just as busy in the Richmond area during the next five years said Each year PG and allocates funds for this pur pose to communities it serves and unincorporated areas with electricity Some of the 1973 allocations and the total each city has received since 1968 are the following: El Cerrito $39200 (Total $209600) Hercules $400 2 4 0 0 Pinole $17800 ($87000) Richmond $112300 ($606500) San Pablo $30400 ($161000) The totals allocated for the unincorporated areas of Con tra Costa County such as El Sobrane is $257600 for 1973 and $1325800 since 1968 How some cities benefit by these funds Stanley said is indicated by the following ex penditures for underground conversion since 1968: Richmond $506974 El Cer rito $179000 and San Pablo $130907 Of the jobs approved and scheduled for 1973 projects for Richmond ($137000) Pin ole ($115000) and San Pablo ($59293) total $361293 So far the only approved project for Richmond this year is the 22nd Street Mac donald Avenue couplet where 22nd and 23rd Streets are being converted into one way arteries The $214 million South en trance Redevelopment Project is San only under ground activity planned for 1973 but a long awaited one Approximately $60000 has Richmond (R) Line (11 miles MacArthur Station to Richmond Station): The five stations on this line beyond MacArthur Station plus parking lots are all complete with final landscap ing contracts nearing comple tion at El Cerrito Plaza and Del Norte Stations All sta tion elevators for the han dicapped will be operable by line opening except the Ber keley Station The Richmond Yard activated late last year is performing daily maintenance for A line reve nue service cars All track work electrification and train control equipment installation was completed last year Train testing began last December San rancisco (M) Line (15 miles Oakland Wye to Daly City Station): The Oak land West Station transbay tube and seven of the nine West Bay stations on this line were completed last year (or prior) including parking lots and landscaping The Daly City Station is scheduled for completion in March The Embarcadero Station shell was completed last year with work on its interior to begin this summer through late 1975 Trackwork was Trying to stay ahead of growth in energy demands is a problem for utility companies generally these days Pacific Gas and Electric Company has managed to meet this challenge success fully however and has both gas and electric resources enough to serve its customers That includes all customers except the large industrial gas customers whose service may be inter rupted when necessary to supply homeowners and others In the Richmond area the challenge has been particu larly brisk because of the growth especially in Pinole according to Gerald Stan ley PG and manager of Bay District with head quarters in Richmond Bay District takes in the areas generally from Berkeley north to Port Costa As a result PG and maintains a continuous con struction program in Bay District throughout the year: New electric substations being built and others en larged underground electric services constructed for new developments existing over head lines including street lights converted to un derground and new gas ser vices extended and new elec tric distribution lines being added And elsewhere within PG and Northern and Central California operating system new electric generating plants are under construction or being planned as the need for more energy grows More gas and electricity are needed not only to supply new customers but also to clean up the environment to provide improved medical fa cilities and services to main tain industrial productivity and to help new businesses get started said Stanley To fulfill its utility respon sibility of serving the huge demand for energy PG and completed last year and electrification is 97 per cent complete Installation of train control equipment and train testing in coming months is geared to a September line opening San rancisco Municipal Railway Market Line (5 miles Embarcadero Sta tion to West Portal Station) The Muni streetcar subway structures under downtown Market Street (above the BART train level) was com pleted to Duboce Street last year The Muni Van Ness Station is 88 per cent com plete Track for Muni trolleys now is being installed from Embarcadero to Duboce Por tal Streetcars were diverted off Market Street December to permit construction of the Muni subway line and Church and Castro Street Stations to the Twin Peaks Tunnel to begin shortly The West Por tal Station to be located near the west end of the tunnel is under design A portion of the new Market Street subway line from the Embar cadero Station to Duboce Street is scheduled to go into operation by mid 1975 The remainder of the line to West Portal will go into operation approximately a year later will spend more than $500 million for new gas and elec tric facilities this year Pro jected capital expenditures for 1973 1976 total approxi mately $27 billion Now that BART is under way more power from PG and is being used for this environmental system It re quires 9300 kilowatts of i power to operate the present Oakland to remont schedule The power demand will reach a peak of 70000 kilo watts when the entire 75 mile three county system becomes operational enough ca pacity to serve a city of about that size population Planning ahead to meet such new loads on its lines is a by word at PG and To stay ahead of growth the company makes 10 to 15 year projections and updates these at frequent intervals how PG and has managed to stay prepared to serve the Richmond and Bay District building expansion which produced nearly $14 million in construction proj ects in the Pinole area alone in 1972 Wherever a new develop ment is ready to get under way PG and probably has been there already or is in at the start installing un derground gas and electric facilities along with other utility companies There are approximately 145000 people residing in the Richmond area generally including the communities of El Cerrito Richmond San Pablo and Pinole plus various unincorporated areas such as El Sobrante PG and serves gas and electric to 50000 customers in this area The continuing underground conversion program (placing existing overhead electric lines underground) of the company business here in 1949 after having moved up from Los Angeles opening up a business known as in the 500 block of Barrett Avenue But in 1960 Graham invent ed and began marketing a swimming pool maintenance product They sold their ap pliance store but in 1961 started up again at their present location The product Graham in vented is marketed all over the world today under the brand name of It is an underwater chemical application which is designed to keep the walls and bottoms of swimming pools free of stains and algae Kitchen Aid ness here for a total of ginning in a shop in the 500 block The start ing point for all mileages on the system is the Oakland Wye Three lines (A and M) begin with their respec tive zero milepost signs at the Oakland Wye switches while the fourth (R) line begins at milepost 232 in the MacArthur Station Also re ported on is construction of the San rancisco Municipal Railway streetcar subway and Outer Market line which is part of the BART project Southern Alameda County (A) Line (24 miles: Oakland Wye to remont Station): The nine stations on this line are complete including park ing lots and landscaping and onened for revenue service September 11 Elevators for the handicapped are now operating in all A line sta tions except the Coliseum Station where construction of the elevator shaft begins this month Construction of the 1000 foot walkway between the Coliseum Station and the Oakland Coliseum complex will begin this summer and end in 1974 A fewsupport fa cilities remain to be com plete such as the car wash facility at Hayward Yard The line is otherwise com plete Concord (C) Line (21 miles Oakland Wye to Concord Station): This line now in cludes the Oakland City Center 12th Street 19th Street and the seven stations from MacArthur Station in North Oakland to Concord Completion of the Concord Station in December 1972 marked the finish of all sta tions and parking lots on this line Concord Station land scaping will be installed early this year Trackwork and line electrification is complete In stallation of train control equipment is well along with checkout and testing to be completed for opening of the line in May Elevators
