New Film For Franlc? BY THOMAS M.

ITAOIt (N. Y. TIMES REPtSrfc.STi HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 10 "The Sweet Smell of Success," published originally in Cosmopolitan magazine as a novelette titled "Tell It to Me Tomorrow." has been bought for filming by Hecht-Lancaster Productions. Ernest Lehman, the author, will take a leave of absence from Metro Goldwyn Mayer, here he is under contract as a writer-director, to prepare the screen adaptation.

He will alter the story line so that the dramatic emphasis will center on a popular singer who becomes a nationwide sensation as the result of promotim by a group of racketeers. The original story focused on a vituperative Broadway and the singer was the secondary character. The producers hope to be able to interest Frank Sinatra in the picture. BARBARA STAXWVCK will co-star with James Cagney in "All Our Tomorrows." Metro, the producing company, previously had announced that Helen Hayes had expressed a desire to do the film. The actress later found she had other commitments.

CHARLES L. GLETT. who took charge of R.K.O. studio operations after the company's recent sale to General Teleradio, has been made executive vice president and a board member of the producing company. The announcement was made' today by Daniel T.

LOEWS, IXC, denied today a report, published in a Hollywood trade paper, that Nicholas M. Schenck would retire as president within six weeks and be succeeded by Arthur Loew. Mr. Loew is president of Loew's International. A few months ago he was appointed by Mr.

Schenck to represent him here at M.G.M., production ami of Loew's Inc. "There is no truth to a report of a change in the presidency of Loew's, said a statement, issued by Howard Dietz, vice president and a member of the board of directors. "Nicholas M. IX "To Catch A Thief." which follows "Mister Roberts" at the A I bee, the build-up and solution were worked out beforehand by David Dodge, a San Franciscan who wrote a novel bearing the same title as the picture. The story is about a French Resistance Movement leader (Grant i whose postwar retirement from prewar activity as a Riviera gem thief is greatly disturbed by an American heiress. MK, plays the retired thief-leader. His acquaintanceship with thieves is very, very limited, but he is willing to bet that his craftsmanship on the screen, fine as it is, may meet with professional objections. "If you play a shoemaker and base your work on a shoemaker you know and there are 20 shoemakers in the audience, one will like your work.

Nineteen will insist you don't know what you are doing," Grant said. "Everyone brings iiis own individual reaction to a movie." DIRECTION of Hitchcock is enjoyed by Grant, he pointed out. "He brings the security of his own considerable knowledge to movie-making. He is very patient and calm with actors. He indicates the mood and intent of a scene and doesn't try to teach actors.

He seems to assume that -they know their work or he wouldn't have hired them." Mr. Hitchcock's most memorable example of patience in Grant's opinion was displayed in the making of "Suspicion" co-staring Grant and Ingrid Bergman. There was one scene which was done over 18 times. When the artors had it right. Hitchcock broke the "take" to say "good morning" to them, indicating approval.

The 10th "take" was used in the picture. IX GENERAL conversation about movie-making Henry Humphries of the Times-Star suggested he'd like to see Grant do some scripts based on Dostoevski novels. Henry was of the opinion Grant would make a fine Raskolnikov in "Crime And Punishment." "You also might do The Idiot' he said. "I should be great in Grant laughed. "I've been rehearsing for the title role all of mv life." Herb Gills, Paramount, exchange manager (Paramount made "To Catch A observed: "If we make anything with a character named Raskolniknr, it better he titled: 'Raskolni-kov.

Immediately thereafter "pressure" was put en him from all sides, because some of his colleagues in both houses are connected with law firms that specialize in Immigration matters. They are afraid thev'll he "embarrassed." HERE'S HOW It Works: The usual immigration practice is to hold up a deportation on receipt of a letter from a Congressman who says he's interested in the case. Most Congressmen who write these letters are genuinely trying to correct miscarriages of justice.

A few capitalize on their official positions and mix business and politics. The "going price" for keeping gangsterx and rich visitors in the country is $75,000.
