m w ar" Friday, October 16, 1953 THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER PegeS TWENTY YEARS AGO IN CINCINNATI (OCTOBER 16, 1933) It was announced that the historic Grand Hotel building at the southwest corner of Fourth St. and Central Ave., a landmark in Cincinnati for nearly 60 years, fiould be torn down as soon as lormal approval from the stockholders was obtained. Offers to rent the site for contemplated parking lot and filling station purposes had been received by R. B. Mills, president of the Grand Hotel Co. Because of the shift in the city's business and transportation center that deprived It of Its trade, the old hostelry had closed its doors June 1. City Council was urged to prant the plea of Carthage Distilleries Corp, for a permit to erect a whisky-aging warehouse of wood In a letter from R. W. Nelson, executive vice president of the Chamber of Commerce. He pointed out that prior to prohibition distilleries and rectifying houses employed 8000 persons in Cincinnati, and that the industry should be encouraged to return to Cincinnati. Alfred B. Benedict, former dean of the Cincinnati Law School and one of the city's leading attorneys, died at his home, 1736 Kinney Ave. He was 78 years old. FIFTY YEARSAGO (OCTOBER 16, 1903) Dr. A. B. Devers, bacteriologist at the City Hospital for the last five years, submitted his resignation, giving as his reason that his work as professor of bacteriology at Miami Medical College required more of his time. The Lockland Improvement Association was organized at a meeting of prominent citizens at the town hall. Dr. G. W. Davis was elected president; Henry Hartman, secretary, and John B. Varelmann, treasurer. r 'jTcOMEDY) Your TICKETS to ENJOYMENT 8:30 pm . . .
