THE TEHEE HAUTE STAR, MONDAY, MARCH 26, 1962 Paret Near Death Following Kayo Manager Says. 'Little Chance Of Recovery' BY MURRAY. ROSE NEW YORK, March Benny "Kid" Paret's manager quoted a neurological specialist today as telling him that the Cuban welterweight's chances of recovering from his fearful beating by Emile Griffith last night were "one in 10,000." Manuel Alfaro, Paret's manager, said he had discussed the ease with Dr. Howard Dunbar and that the physician had given him the "one in 10,000" diagnosis. "Dr.

Dunbar told me that he believed everything that had been done for Paret was excellent," Alfaro said. Paret remained in critical condition in Roosevelt Hospital He was taken there following his knockout loss to Griffith last night. His condition, according to a hospital spokesman, remained "poor." GRIFFITH, accompanied by his co-manager, Gil Clancy; Harry Markson, director of boxing for Madison Square Garden, and press agent, John Condon, appeared at the hospital, but were not permitted to see Paret. were here," said Alfaro, who has been maintaining a vigil with his stricken fighter. "They would have been welcome had I known it." The muscular 25-year-old Cuban underwent an operation for the removal of a blood clot near the brain early this morning after he was carried unconscious from the ring to the dressing room and later to the hospital.

Paret absorbed a fearful beating from the 24-year-old Griffith before referee Ruby Goldstein stopped the slaughter at 2:09 of the 12th round of the 15-round welterweight title bout at Madison Square Garden. The fight was televised nationally. THERE WERE BITTER feelings between the two fighters who had split in two previous title fights. Griffith, a native of. the Virgin Islands, accused the Spanish-speaking Paret of makng "nasty remarks to me" at the weighing in ceremony Saturday.

Alfaro charged Griffith's handlers with double crossing Paret by not signing for a return bout. Griffith had won the title from Paret by knocking out the Cuban in the thirteenth round at Miami Beach, last April Sept. 30 by winning a split, 1. Y. Fight ALBANY, N. March Rockefeller directed the state athletic commission today to submit a complete report on a welterweight fight which Benny "Kid" Paret was critically injured last night at New York's Madison Square Garden. Paret, defending champion, was knocked out by Emile Griffith in the twelfth round. Paret was taken unconscious to Roosevelt Hospital, where he underwent a prolonged brain operation.

He was reported in critical condition. ROCKEFELLER said in a telegram to Melvin L. Krulewitch, chairman of the commission that "I am deeply concerned and disturbed over the serious injuries received by Benny Paret." The Governor called for a report, within 24 hours, on the details of the fight, with emphasis on what happened immediately preceding the stoppage of the fight by the referee. Rockefeller apparently was seeking to determine whether! the fight should have been stopped sooner than it was. The Governor also called upon Krulewitch to submit "a detailed report on the medical and other measures which the state athletic commission took in this case and takes generally to prevent or avoid serious injuries to contestants." Paret's record is 34-12-3. GRIFFITH, fired up to an intense pitch by the weighing in incident, swept the first five rounds from the slugging champion last night.

He hurt the grim-faced Paret in the fo'urth, fifth, and tenth rounds before pounding him senseless with 26 straight punches in the twelfth round. Despite the pounding he took earlier. Paret snapped out of his lethargy late in the sixth round when he dropped the over-confident Griffith with a right and left to the jaw. Griffith fell on the seat of his pants and wobbled to his feet at the count of six. He was hurt and grasped the ropes.

Goldstein counted to eight when Griffith let go of the ropes and headed toward Paret. The bell sounded then to save Griffith. That was Paret's first and last big chance although he went on to take the seventh and eighth rounds. Griffith reassumed command in the ninth and in the tenth he all but floored the stricken champion. Nothing much happened in the eleventh round but as the twelfth started Paret appeared sluggish and pepless as he moved from his corner.
