D-6 THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRERThursday, September 17, 1981 1 1 prep players of the week Two-Way Football Players Honored Two-way players made their mark on the high school football fields this past weekend. Landing The Enquirer's Player of the Week honors were Wyoming's Andy Hearn, Deer Park's Jerry James and Summit Country Day's Drew Gates. Cross-country Runner of the Week was Rob Rhati-gan of Turpin. Hearn, a senior, swarmed the Turpin Spartans on defense, intercepting three passes and recovering two fumbles. On offense he gained 53 yards on six carries and caught two passes for 23 yards.

James ran wild against Taylor. The senior tailback picked up 216 yards on 22 carries, scored two touchdowns and defensively made seven tackles. Gates powered the Silver Knights over Dayton, Ky. with 206 yards on 24 carries, returned a kick-off 85 yards for a touchdown, booted three punts 134 yards for a 44.6 average and was in on seven tackles. Rhatigan finished first in this past weekend's two-mile Reading Invitational at French Park with an 11:36 in a 56-man field.

Other honorable mention efforts included: Hughes' Ron Allen, who passed for 257 yards, hit 10 of 21 and two touchdowns against Lemon-Monroe; and Gary Sexton of Norwood, who rushed for 129 yards on 12 carries, passed for 3-of-4 for 53 yards, accounted for two touchdowns, and had four solo tackles. At 25:10 of the first half, Walters got a pass from fullback Micky Dunn, slammed a shot off Kuechly and then knocked in the rebound. The half ended, 1-0. THE GAME appeared to be going according to plan.

UC had outscored its opponents, 12-2, this season, while Xavier had been out-scored, 11-4. The tempo didn't change much in the early going of the second half. But 11 minutes into the period, Gilioli, switched from fullback to midfield for this game to put some punch in the XU offense, lined a shot from 20 yards out into the upper right corner of the UC net. Gilioli added the game-winner with 13 minutes left. Midfielder Dan Martin set up Gilioli, who slammed the ball into the same spot as his first goal.

"It went right where I wanted It," Gilioli said. "A major breakdown on defense," UC coach Jim McDowell called it. Xavier iced it with less than seven minutes left when, on a breakaway, John McVey tapped a perfectly timed pass to 5-foot-6 freshman Dan Brady. Brady put it In easily. "We needed this one really bad," gushed Gilioli, who had only one assist in Xavier's first five games.

"This turns the season around." All in one half, no less. BY PETER KING Sports Reporter Someone asked Xavier soccer coach John Capurro about his team's offense before his Musketeers took the Nippert Stadium Super-turf against Cincinnati Wednesday night. Capurro cringed, smiled, and replied: "Can't we talk about the weather, or some--thing else?" Two hours later, Capurro's demeanor had changed. So had the Xavier offense. The Musketeers scored as many goals in one half as they had in four previous games, and Capurro was thrilled.

"This is the best we've played' all he said. No doubt about that. Xavier (2-4) got two. goals from former all-city player Marc Gilioli of Walnut Hills and rallied to beat UC, 3-1, in a mild upset before about 200 chilled fans. "We got it together tonight," said Capurro as the final seconds ran out.

"I'm really pleased. We finally showed something on offense." The defense wasn't bad either. UC (3-2) had the ball in Xavier's half of the field for probably 60 of the game, but only freshman Jamaican striker Teddy Walters solved XU. goalie Tom Kuechly, who is having an excel Nov Is The Time To Buy All-Season Radial Tires! Tefal Fiuaced Payments Payback BY MICHAEL PAOLERCIO Sports Reporter The Ohio First District Court of Appeals upheld a lower court decision prohibiting out-of-state students from participating in Ohio high school athletics. The decision, made in the Hamilton County Common Pleas Court in September of 1980, was met with expected disappointment from the Cincinnati lawyer, Sylvan Reisenfeld, who represented the eight St. Xavier High School students involved. "We felt that what we had presented in our brief's arguments would make the court feel that there were constitutional problems involved," Reisenfeld said. "Obviously, the court felt otherwise and that was their prerogative." Reisenfeld indicated he would meet with the parents of the eight students involved to discuss whether they would continue to appeal the case to the Ohio Supreme "I really don't know if we will," he said.

"We'll make our decision in a couple of weeks." The three appellate court judges, Robert L. Black, Raymond E. Shannon and Harry T. Klusmeier, affirmed the decision rendered by visiting Judge Glenn E. Delting in the case of Thomas Menke, by his parents Dr.
