Wayne and be supplied. Ths lecture of Belva Lockwood at Powell'i Hall Monday evening was nol so well attended as It shoald have been, and those who failed to hear her lost a rare treat. Belva Lockwood la an able, cloqaent and forcible speaker. Her voice ia clear and strong, yet has nothing of the masculine roughness it. She talks very fast and it would take a good etcnographor to follow her, yet every word and was plain and distinct.

She is perfectly at home on the lecture stage, having been schooled by years of praetlea. Her subject' 'Social and Political Life In Waahlngtun," waa handled from the standpoiat as she baa seen it. Her residence of more than twenty years In tbeNational Capital, and her aueial, political and business position has given her a chance to become familiar with many things which other women never know. She opened her lecture with a deaoriptlon of the city of Washington, Its' magnificent public and private bnildings, parka and streets as they ara baantifled by nature and art; its Inhabitants made np of all and different atratas ofaoctal life, and the maonur In which the gay and aristocratic citizens and vlaltora spend the winter season there. The position she baa accepted baa made her more familiar with oar great public men than any other lady in the nation.

Her description of the political life and the parts played by the great party leaders, abowa a greater familiarity with the politics of the nation than many of our pollticana can boast of. Fire at Itepabllc City. We learn from J. C. Price that the little City of Republic snflTered tTom a very destructive fire last Sunday night. It was discovered about 11:30 In the Airniture atore of and soon spread to the harness shopof J.

L. Cooler and from there to the postofflce. The most of Cooper's stock was saved and every thing was saved from tbe postofflce. Tho fire had gained such headway that nothing was saved from the furniture store. Tbe loss in all will amount to several thonsand dollars, partially covered byinsurance.
