RMO Wednesday, January 23, Wl 1 1 II. 1 1 I.NQUKl MetroU-3 Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Obituaries Generals For morn toinpli'lo inlorniiition and address til lln the individual death notice Helen Jay, script writer She, husband collaborated on radio, BY STH VE HOFFMAN The Cincinnati Iuiquirer Helen Jay filled her life collaborating with her husband on radio and TV scripts, working as a school secretary and battling for tolerance for all people. A native of Boston, she moved to Cincinnati from New York City in 1947 when her husband, Verne R. Jay, joined WLW radio as an actor, writer and producer. Mrs.

Jay, 86, died Sunday at the Orthodox Jewish Home, Bond Hill, where she had lived since April, 1988. She was diagnosed with liver cancer a month ago. "The two dominant threads in my mother's life were a sense of humor and her tolerance for all people," said her daughter, Linda Brandt of Sunnyvale, a free-lance writer and editor. "My parents were a close-knit couple who collaborated on drama scripts and plays during their 46 years of marriage." Before she married Verne Jay, Mrs. Jay graduated from Boston Teachers College and worked as a kindergarten teacher.

They met at the Barn, a Beacon Hill community theater. During the 1940s, the Jays wrote radio scripts for such programs as The Shadow, Mr. and Mrs. North, Grand Central Station and Famous Jury Trials. They later wrote for television programs Gunsmokc and The Doctors.

In the 1970s, the couple wrote a book on mainstreaming the handicapped, but it was never published. The Jays also attempted to adapt it for a public television series. Mrs. Jay served more than 10 years as secretary in the Woodward High School library. "She was a lovely person, always kind to everybody and everybody loved her, but she would get very upset with people who derided the Jewish faith," said Anna Borchin of Erlanger, a retired Woodward librarian.

During their Cincinnati years, the Jays lived in Hyde Park, Bond Hill, Koselawn and Western Hills. Before Verne Jay's death in 1980 at age 79, they lived in Hillcrest Home for the Elderly, Roselawn. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Jay is survived by a brother, Robert K. Golden of New York City, and a sister, Frances Nigrosh of Brookline, Mass.

Draut and his wife, Lydia, made a good living running a neighborhood business, the Ideal Restaurant in Rising Sun, Ind. "It was just a normal mom-and-pop restaurant," said their son, Charles F. Draut, of Dayton, Ohio.

Monday, Mr. Draut died at Kettering Memorial Hospital in Dayton. He was 88. His wife had died in June. For 30 years, many Rising Sun residents went to the Ideal for barbecue sandwiches, chicken dinners and T-bone steaks.

During the 1940s, "it was the place where all the 'in' people gathered after the basketball games," Draut said. It was always located on Main Street, although it changed buildings and owners several times, Draut said. Ruth Louise Blase Gast BY KEVIN O'HANLON The Cincinnati Enquirer For Ruth Louise Blase Gast, family came first, especially her grandchildren. Mrs. Gast, 69, died Sunday of a heart attack at her Mount Lookout home. "She was involved with the grandchildren pretty much all the time," said her husband, Hamilton. "They called her up all the time.

So did her nieces and nephews. They called her "A.R." for Aunt Ruth." Mrs. Gast was active in the Kilgour School PTA from 1951 to 1963, where she was instrumental in getting a foreign language program in the curriculum. She also helped establish the Cincinnati chapter of the Epilepsy Foundation. For a time she operated the blood bank for the 1st Masonic District Officers Association.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Gast is survived by a son, William C. Gast of Cincinnati; two daughters, Pamela Holmes of Ruth Gast Memorials can be Burns Institute, 202 cinnati 45219, or the Syndrome Alliance, avenues, Cincinnati 45229. Cincinnati begins search for lost gas-station tanks Many may be leaking; costly cleanup possible Gunn said he knows there are old fuel tanks at Lunken Airport, most firehouses and many city parks, such as Ault, Alms and French. New tanks are made of fiberglass, but the old ones are steel, which can give way after about 20 years.

The city became alarmed about LUST after tanks kept popping up during con struction projects, Gunn said. One such discovery last year in Madisonviile cost more than $100,000 to fix. A typical job would cost $30,000 to BY SCOTT BURGINS The Cincinnati Enquirer The hunt for LUST begins today. LUST is the eye-catching industrial acronym for Leaking Underground Storage Tanks rusting hulks from long-gone gas stations and fuel stops that may be leaking into the environment. Cincinnati officials suspect there are at least 40 such tanks, buried on city-owned land.

All of them need a closer look and at least 25 should be removed promptly, according to a report issued in September by Michael Gunn, assistant to the city manager. To dig them up and clean any spills would cost a minimum of $1 million and possibly several times that, city records show. "We know we have a problem we don't know the extent of it," said Gunn, head of the city's division of employee safety and risk management. Today, a city contractor starts tracking down the tanks. Bruck, Hartman Esposi-to Inc.

will use state records, fire-departments files and the memories of longtime city employees in the search, said Lou Bruck, vice president of field operations. During the next month they hope to find out what's inside the tanks and determine which ones need work first, he said. Most of the tanks held from 300 to 1,000 gallons of gasoline, diesel fuel or oil. Some were half-filled when they were abandoned, and in many cases they were forgotten before city acquired the land. Elections chief wants $150,000 computer BY KEVIN O'HANLON $70,000, with troublesome spots climbing over $100,000.

The biggest expense is dumping the contaminated soil in a landfill, which can run $500,000 for 10,000 cubic-yards, Gunn said. A budget for the total project will be submitted for next year. "I would be surprised if they didn't have some kind of minor problems with at least one-fourth of their tanks," said Bob Ireson, bureau chief of the State Fire Marshall's office in Columbus. It is difficult to assess whether the public is at risk from the tanks, Ireson said. Even the worst leaks would be unlikely to reach local water taps because almost all Cincinnatians get their drinking water from the Ohio River, not underground sources, he said.

There is a threat from explosion or from just inhaling the fumes, but serious leaks probably would have been spotted by now as they escaped through sewers, Ireson said. "Still, they're not safe to just be left there," he said. report Nov. 6 elections results. Swafford said the problem started when her office was swamped Election Day by more than 1,300 people who showed up to vote under a new state law for people who had moved but had not notified the Board of Elections.

"We never in any way anticipated we'd have the numbers of people coming to the Board of Elections" to vote, she said. Also, a tape containing the vote totals from each of Hamilton County's 1.009 precincts contained an error and had to be reprocessed. The result? Hamilton County did not report its election results to the Ohio secretary of state until nearly 3 a.m. the day after the election. Cuyahoga County, which has about l'j times the population of Hamilton County and uses a computer system similar to the one Swafford wants, reported its vote totals bv 10:30 p.m.

Pam Swafford. director of the county Board of Elections, told county commissioners Tuesday the money is needed to replace ballot-counting equipment that is 17 years old. Hamilton County was the last of Ohio's 88 counties to.
