TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 2010 LOCAL NEWS THE ENQUIRER LIVES REMEMBERED Bernice Busken on life squad Volunteer earned EMT certification By Denise Smith Amos Bernice Dowd "Bernie" Busken was one of the first women in Hamilton County to work in an emergency life squad. Mrs. Busken, the daughter of a bank chairman, mother of six and wife to Busken Bakery chief Joseph Busken became the first woman to volunteer with the Terrace Park life squad, a part of the Fire Department, in the early 1960s. In those days most women were homemakers and Mrs. Busken didn't rush out to fires, Mrs.

Busken car accidents and other disasters. But Mrs. Busken wanted emergency training, said Joseph Busken Jr. She flourished, volunteering with Terrace Park and later Indian Hill fire departments and with the Indian Hill Rangers, where she was a dispatcher, liaison and office worker. She also taught CPR and first aid to children and adults for the American Red Cross and became a certified emergency medical technician.

When she moved to Henville, Ohio, she continued eight dersonville, years ago N.C., to and Center- then a volunteering. She died Thursday at Bethany Village in Centerville from complications from a fall and from cancer. She was 79. "She was a real trailblazer for women, getting emergency medical training and firefighting," said Sally Dyer, a daughter who lives in Dayton, Ohio. Mrs.

Busken was born in New Liberty, Ky. Her father, Fred Dowd, was chief executive with First National Bank of Cincinnati, now part of U.S. Bank. When she lived in Terrace Park, she met Joseph Busken, whose father founded the Busken bakeries. They married in 1950.

With six children, Mrs. Busken was a devoted and organized mother, Joseph Busken said, but she also loved helping people in emergencies. "She liked police work," he said. "She had a very curious mind, a suspicious mind. She became a dispatcher and did various record keeping jobs" for the Rangers.

As a volunteer life squad member she learned to operate fire equipment, and she carried a large alarm device everywhere that predates today's radios. Her children grew up knowing their mother would occasionally leave for emergencies. "We could be somewhere and she'd get a call on her radio, which was not quite shoe-box size, and off she'd go to a fire or an accident," Dyer said. "That's how we grew up." Though the Buskens divorced in 1978 and remarried and moved, they remained friends. Two children, Steven and Martha, died earlier.

Besides Dyer and her exhusband, Joseph Busken, Mrs. Busken is survived by daughters Susan Hunter Indian Hill and Mary Via of Greensboro, N.C.; son David Busken of Varna, sister Kathy Bauman of Terrace Park; and 11 grandchildren. A memorial service is 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Wilkinson Dayton.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Thomas-Justin Memorial Funeral Home, 7500 Montgomery Road in Sycamore Township.
