0 01 01 1 3 3 THE ENQUIRER, CINCINNATI, MONDAY, AUGUST 10, 1936 19 Shortage Stirs Mills; Steel Men Note Price Rise Cleveland, August 9 -(AP)-Sustained demand for heavier finished materials and augmented backlogs kept steelworks operations unchanged last week at per cent, the Magazine Steel said today. The publication reported increased prices for scrap caused some mills to show concern over a possible shortage. Increases in nearly all districts raised Steel's scrap index 63 cents to $14.25, the highest since the last week of April, when the composite was $11.33. "A number of melters using both pig and scrap have begun to include more pig iron in their melt, Steel said. "Pig iron shipments have started to pick up, current deliveries being slighly ahead of one year ago." The magazine reported midsum and therationantS compares favormer farm implement ably with that of 1929 despite the adverse effect of the drought.

The seasonal decline, it said, has not been as great as many manufacturers expected. Some of the large automobile body plants, Steel said, have started pressing diemakers for earliest possible deliveries on new die work. The publication noted a decline 14,166 units in the auto industry, production for the week being estimated at 81,804 compared to 48,067 units in the corresponding week last year. "Although bookings in sheets showed a falling-off in comparison with the previous week." the magazine added, "automotive tonnage 1S increasing and miscellaneous specifications are in fair volume for this time of year. "The principal problem for many producers is the insistence they have encountered for speedy shipments.

Demands for both hot and cold-rolled strip is strong. Bar producers now have back-logs of three to four weeks." Steel reported tin plate producers operating at full capacity, with six to eight weeks of unfilled orders ahead. large volume of pending work prospect for makers of fairly, shapes and plates, the magazine said. "On some sizes of these materials, deliveries extend for eight weeks," it continued, many santo structural fabricating shops are sold out until October. "The outlook is promising for tonnage shipbuilders, both private operators and the government being likely to require considerable material in the immediate future.

Structural shape awards, than in the preceding 28,635 tons, were slightly, larger Steel observed that July steel ingot production of 3,922,731 gross tons was 1.56 per cent under the June output 3,984,845 tons, but per cent the 2,267,827 tons produced in July, 1935. The daily average in July was 150,874 tons, compared to 153,263 in June and 87,224 in July, 1935. Output for the year to August 1 was 25,249,066 tons, 37.8 per cent over total production 18,310,478 gross tons in the corresponding 1935 period. The iron and steel price composite is up to $33.82, a 10-cent increase due to the advance in scrap. Steel's composite of finished material prices remains at $53.40.

Operations last in the Pittsburgh district week, 2 points to 71 per cent, Chicago one point to Birmingham to Youngstown operations were down 1 point to 77, New England 10 to 68, and Cincinnati 4 to 72. Cincinnati Produce Markets Shortage en in staple fruits and vegetables the districts which normally provide requirements for Cincinnati market assumed proportions which merchants regard as startling at the close of the week. Letters received by leading dealers indicated that crop damage in Michigan and Northern Wisconsin would preclude shipments of potatoes, beans, tomatoes, peaches, cabbage and other fruits and vegetables. Tennessee districts made similar reports, especially with regard to potatoes and tomatoes, the quality of the small yield of the latter being poor. Drought damage in the Miami Valley and near-by states also has reduced quality and quantity of production in virtually all lines.

Wholesale prices here were on a higher trend, but aside from cabbage and tomatoes were not much higher that the week previous. Dealers said that it would take more rain to assure vegetable crops in this region. Pasturage, however, was reported much benefitted and the milk sup- AIR-MAIL DISPATCHES. UNITED STATES POST OFFICE. FHA Urges Building Of Low Cost Homes; Market Now Exists Construction Of 5,000,000 Houses Is Suggested Washington, August 9-(AP)Reporting a market exists for the construction of 5,000,000 low-cost homes, Federal Housing Administration officials said today they were moving to bring about privately-financed building In this field. Several months ago, the Federal Housing Administration drafted "planning principles' under which it estimated homes could be built for as little as $1,200. It now is seeking to spur construction of low-cost homes, officials said, for persons with incomes of between $1,000 and $3,000. These homes would cost between $2,000 and $4,000.

Miles Colean, Federal Housing Administration technical department chief, reported the Federal agency has sent information on low-cost homes to builders, lumber dealers, architects and others with the urgent they launch actively into suggestion, building. A letter to such groups from W. D. Flanders, Deputy Administrator, said the Federal Housing Administration has no intention of encourstandardization of low-cost homes through the use of its "planning principles." Also in the field of Federallyencouraged home building was an announcement by the Home Owners' Loan Corporation today that to mature, amounting to $49,736,000 the bond issue of that agency cog and due August 15, would be paid ANNOUNCING SERVICE IN THE PUBLISHING OF IN MEMORIAM NOTICES The Enquirer has prepared large looseleaf book of several hundred Memoriam verses for its readers. ply was increased according to reports. Butter prices were stationary as were those of butter fat. Outside markets were slightly weaker. Evidence of weakness WAS reported in fresh eggs, due largely to lack of demand. Prices both at Chicago and New York were fractionally lower but remained unchanged here throughout the week.

Storage withdrawals were both heavy here and at all other points. Poultry was quiet with prices on all grades but Rock Fryers weak to lower. The fryers were firm and unchanged. Colored hens ruled steady but other grades in broilers and smaller springers were off 3c. Spring ducks slumped 2c and geese, guineas and turkeys were in the discard.

All chicken sales were light, Cash grains eased off at the close. Wheat sold off rye corn 2c, and oats All were active at the decline. Hay sales were less active but prices ruled steady.
