HE B4 THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2009 FN LOCAL NEWS THE ENQUIRER LIVES REMEMBERED 'Molly' Whittaker influenced children Montessori teacher helped found school By Sharon Coolidge HYDE PARK When Mary "Molly" Whittaker retired from the Seven Hills Lotspeich School, her co-workers gave her a chair inscribed with the words, "She knows the secret of childhood." "The Secret of Childhood" is a book by Maria Montessori, one of the most influential educators of the 20th century. Montessori schooling takes into consideration a child's body, mind and soul. Mrs. Whittaker helped solidify Montessori teaching in the area. Daughter Polly Whittaker said that when people hear her last name they often ask: "Are you Molly's daughter?" When she proudly responds, "Yes," that person shares how much her mother's teaching life or their Mrs.

Whittaker Mrs. Whittaker in 1945, working at the school for three years before marrying Harry Whittaker in 1948 and returning to Cincinnati. In the 1950s she co-hosted "Sharps and Flats," a radio program for children broadcast from the basement of the Alms Hotel in Walnut Hills. In the late 1960s, Mrs. Whittaker earned a master's degree at Xavier University in Montessori education.

Teaching degree in hand, Mrs. Whittaker taught at a Glendale church's Montessori school for five years. When that school closed, she and coworker Beverly Konicov started Parents and Young Children in Harmony, packing up their car and driving to schools and churches and other parenting groups, teaching them about Montessori schooling. In 1970, Mrs. Whittaker helped found the New School, now the New School Montessori in North Avondale, where she served on the board.

The school's purpose was to extend the Montessori teaching method through the elementary grades and to demonstrate alternative learning methods to the Cincinnati Public Schools system. CPS now runs seven public Montessori schools. "She was a trailblazer," Konicov said. In 1975, Mrs. Whittaker, along with Konicov, took a job at the Lotspeich School.

Mrs. Whittaker retired in 1990. "Like Maria Montessori, Molly had a deep respect for the dignity and potential of every child," Konicov said. "She was magical with children and infused her teaching with joy." Mrs. Whittaker volunteered at the Cerebral Palsy Center and in later years for the Ronald McDonald House of Cincinnati.

She was a patron of the Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the May Festival and many museums. In her free time, she loved sailing. A memorial service is 10 a.m. April 25 at Cincinnati Country Club, 2348 Grandin Road, Hyde Park. She also is survived by her husband of 61 years, Harry, and four grandchildren.

Sheriff: Ohio man kills wife, son, then himself The Associated Press BELLE VALLEY, Ohio A man who told a sheriff's dispatcher he had money problems strangled his wife and 11-yearold son, then shot and killed himself, authorities said Wednesday. Theodore Bayly, 39, called the dispatcher about 2 a.m., saying he had already killed his family and was going to take care of himself, Noble County Sheriff Landon Smith said. Bayly told the dispatcher in a sevenminute call that he was having financial problems and "couldn't afford it anymore," Smith said. He told the dispatcher where to find the bodies and hung up.

Authorities found Bayly's body on an embankment about 35 feet from the family's mobile home near Belle Valley, about 75 miles east of Columbus. He had a shotgun wound to the head, Smith said. Bayly's wife, Janice Bayly, 40, was found inside the home, and their son Colton was in the back seat of a vehicle, Smith said. Smith said they were strangled with an electrical cord. The boy appeared to have been placed in the car after being killed, Smith said.

Smith told the Zanesville Times Recorder that sheriff's deputies had never before been called to the home. "No 911 calls, no domestic violence calls," he said. "Nothing." Funerals lists services from current Enquirer. For online viewing click on Obituaries. Date Time Feb.
