Mr. Fine was known for his many philanthropic contributions, including to multiple sclerosis research and the Jewish Welfare Fund. He was instrumental in the building of the Hospice center in Blue Ash. He also served on the boards of Jewish Hospital and Isaac M. Wise Temple. He was a dog lover, and once said: "You can never trust a man who a dog did not like." "One of his pet hobbies was redelivering newspapers that the family dog would frequently borrow from the neighbors," Marshall said. Mr. Fine is survived by his wife, Cherie Fine, of Hyde Park, to whom he was married 67 years; another daughter; Inez Allen, of Amberley Village; a sister, Rose Selbst of Mason; grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Mr. Fine, a former president and co-owner of Duro Paper Bag Manufacturing Co. in Ludlow, died of natural causes Sept 30 at his home in Hyde Park. He was 90. "My father tried to make everything right and safe for everyone he met," said his daughter, Marlin Marshall of Blue Ash. "He traveled a lot around the world and always stopped to shop, talk with people and never forgot to pick up something special for his family." Mr. Fine received a law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School and joined the military. He served during World War II and achieved the rank of captain. He worked with Duro for 50 years, and his daughter said he was the creator of the modern-day, colored shopping bag. "In the early 1960s, he created the first Saks Fifth Avenue Christmas Color shopping bag. Bushelman, who succeeded Shaffer as chamber president in 1972, said Shaffer was a mentor to him. "I had to look to him for direction," he said. "He really helped me and worked with me." Shaffer, a U.S. Army veteran who served in the South Pacific, also traveled widely with his wife, Jean. They visited Egypt, India, Singapore, Hong Kong and Europe. These were "some of the happiest times of their lives," his son said. Family always came first to Shaffer, his son said, recalling years of scouting campouts with his dad. "There wasn't enough money, but there was lots of love," he said. "He was a most unselfish individual . . . a model father who always was supportive of his fami-ly." Robert "Bob" Bernard Shaffer, 84, formerly of Er-langer and Anderson Township, died Sept. 22 in Arlington, Texas. Shaffer was a longtime employee with the Green Line transportation system in Cincinnati, Covington and Newport, as well as general manager of the Miami Valley Regional Transit Authority in Dayton, Ohio. Shaffer was president of the Campbell County Chamber of Commerce in 1969 when it merged with the Kenton and Boone chambers and was one of the first to lead the organization in 1970-71, something he was very proud of, his son Bob Shaffer said.
