FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2007 LOCAL NEWS THE ENQUIRER Lives remembered Joseph Fine was generous to charities Duro Bag exec inventive By Allen Howard Bigness surrounded Joseph B. Fine, who weighed 13 pounds when he was born on April 23, 1917 near Madison, Wis. At the time, he was believed to be the largest baby boy ever born in Wisconsin. Mr. Fine He was always big; playing basketball and football for the University of Wisconsin, standing well over 6 feet tall and weighing more than 200 pounds.

And that bigness followed him through life: big smile, big heart and big on friendship. Mr. Fine, a former president and co-owner of Duro Paper Bag Manufacturing Co. in Ludlow, died of natural causes Sept 30 at his home in Hyde Park. He was 90.

"My father tried to make everything right and safe for everyone he met," said his daughter, Marlin Marshall of Blue Ash. "He traveled a lot around the world and always stopped to shop, talk with people and never forgot to pick up something special for his family." Mr. Fine received a law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School and joined the military. He served during World War II and achieved the rank of captain. He worked with Duro for 50 years, and his daughter said he was the creator of the modern-day, colored shopping bag.

"In the early 1960s, he created the first Saks Fifth Avenue Christmas Color shopping bag. He gave away 25,000 of them, thinking that they would not sell, but he received an order for 10,000 more," Marshall said. Mr. Fine was also president of the Paper Bag Institute before he retired in 1985. Marshall said her father was an avid sports fan and that her memories include frequent Reds, Bengals and University of Cincinnati games.

Mr. Fine was known for his many philanthropic contributions, including to multiple sclerosis research and the Jewish Welfare Fund. He was instrumental in the building of the Hospice center in Blue Ash. He also served on the boards of Jewish Hospital and Isaac M. Wise Temple.

He was a dog lover, and once said: "You can never trust a man who a dog did not like." "One of his pet hobbies was redelivering newspapers that the family dog would frequently borrow from the neighbors," Marshall said. Mr. Fine is survived by his wife, Cherie Fine, of Hyde Park, to whom he was married 67 years; another daughter; Inez Allen, of Amberley Village; a sister, Rose Selbst of Mason; grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Funeral services have been held. Memorial contributions can be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky, 4460 Lake Forest Cincinnati, OH 45242; Isaac M.
