to on co B4 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2007 LOCAL NEWS THE ENQUIRER Lives remembered Edgar Steinau founded art studio UC grad won Bronze Star at Iwo Jima By Rebecca Goodman KENWOOD Edgar Steinau distinguished himself fighting against the Japanese on Iwo Jima as a first lieutenant with the 5th Marine Division, 5th Tank Battalion during World War II. Part of the invasion force, he found himself pinned at the front with his battalion March 15, 1945. Mr. Steinau got off his tank and moved about the front line for 45 minutes gathering information for an operation against the Japanese. He led an attack on the enemy position.

His citation says that "his initiative, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval He received the Bronze Star. Later, he served as an intelligence officer with the Marine Occupation Force in Japan. Mr. Steinau, of the former Steinau-Fisher Art Studio a graphic design firm, died Sept. 30 of prostate cancer at Hospice of Cincinnati in Blue Ash.

The Kenwood resident was 87. "He was proud of the work he did with the art studio," said his son, John Steinau, of Loveland. "He developed and built an art studio that serviced clients in the area for years, including The corporation was dissolved when Mr. Steinau retired about 15 years ago. A Cincinnati native, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati and was a member of Delta Phi Delta, an honorary art fraternity, and Phi Eta Sigma, a scholastic fraternity.

He became interested in horse racing while in his teens and enjoyed the hobby until just before his death. At one time he owned horses, which he raced locally and around the country. He also did some marketing work for Latonia Race Course (now Turfway Park). "He always saw the good in people and looked for the positive even in a moment of trouble," said his son. "You make a mistake, you learn from that mistake he taught us all that.

He was always a very helpful and generous and kind Mr. Steinau served as president of the board of directors of Mariemont Community Church and was a past president of Terrace Park Country Club and the Art Directors Club of Cincinnati. He was also a member of the Mariemont Preservation Foundation. In addition to his son John, survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary Jane Reichelderfer Steinau; two other sons, Edgar Steinau II, of Tulsa, and Steven Steinau, of San Diego; a sister, Catherine Craig, of Kenwood; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services have been held.

Campbell County officers honored The Enquirer Mr. Steinau Two Campbell County Police Department officers who helped empower residents cut crime were named Law Enforcement Officers of the Year by Crime Stoppers.

Lt. Barrett "BJ." Champagne, 45, of Alexandria, and Officer Chris Juniet, 43, of Fort Thomas, were presented with the awards at a Wednesday breakfast. Champagne and Juniet helped start a Neighborhood Watch program at the Derby Hill Mobile Home Park in the Claryville section of Campbell County. The park had crime problems with juveniles and some fairly significant drug activity, Champagne said Wednesday. "Criminal activity and criminal mischief is almost non-existent now" there, Champagne said.
