SUNDAY, JANUARY 20, 2008 LOCAL NEWS THE ENQUIRER LIVES REMEMBERED Barbara Knoop Shepard co-owned women's shop 'She had a tremendous sense of style' HYDE PARK There are probably still women walking around town in dresses from Vogues Vanities, an upscale women's shop that closed in the early 1990s. Its co-owner was Barbara. Knoop Shepard, a stylish, striking woman who not only sold top-quality and timeless clothes, but provided superior service to her faithful customers. Dresses would be packed up and sent to a client's residence in a cab so she could try them on in the comfort of her own home. "It was an old-fashioned way of doing business," said Lee Bulger of Hyde Park, a son-in-law of Mrs.

Shepard. "It was a real service, hands-on approach. I know a lot of women in the city were disappointed when Vogues Vanities closed. It was just a look that older people liked. It wasn't something that came and went.

I think you probably see some Vogues Vanities dresses today on some of the older women." Mrs. Shepard, 87, died Dec. 31 at the Hyde Park Health Center of Shepard as R. Shepard, died. A wife, mother and volunteer, she was also an excellent businesswoman.

"She had a tremendous sense of style with her store," said her son, Thomas R. Shepard Jr. of Hyde Park. "She always looked terrific. She was bright, witty, very confident and opinionated on most matters just someone you loved to have a conversation with." The store was relocated to Hyde Park before it was closed in the early 1990s.

A native of Troy, Ohio, Mrs. Shepard grew up on a farm there. She attended Denison University where she was a member of Kappa Gamma sorority. She moved to Cincinnati after marrying Thomas Shepard. He was wounded at Iwo Jima while serving with the Marine Corps during World War II and was hospi- Mrs.

talized in Washington D.C. for about 18 months. During that time, Mrs. Shepard stayed in Washington and drove for the Red Cross Motor Corps. Back in Cincinnati, she was active with the Junior League and at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, president of the Hillsdale School (now the Seven Hills School) PTA, and served on the board of Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky.

"She was young at heart," her son said. "She had friends that were children and friends that were very elderly. She related to all types of people." In addition to her son, survivors include two daughters, Ann S. Bulger of Hyde Park and Amy S. Richardson of Vero Beach, a sister, Janet Montanas of Hyde Park; six grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Services have been held. Burial was at the Knoop Family Cemetery in Troy, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to the Church of the Redeemer, or Planned Parenthood, 2314 Auburn Cincinnati, OH 45219. Dr. McLain, medical educator By Rebecca Goodman was clerkship director at UC EAST WALNUT HILLS Dr.

Clarence Reid McLain Jr. held Lori Mari Balster's entire body in one hand after she was born prematurely in 1973. Back then, prognoses for such babies weren't good. Lori's mother had lost two earlier pregnancies because of a rare Rh factor. Dr.

McLain administered three transfusions in utero more difficult and unusual then than today. After she was born, Dr. McLain resuscitated Lori and gave her a an immediate transfusion and an IV. Over the next 84 days, he resolved 38 different medical problems I Lori had, including jaundice and anemia. The girl grew up to be a chemist and a member of Mensa.

Such was the type of intense and personal care that Dr. McLain, professor emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, taught his students to provide. For 37 years, he was director of medical student education in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the College of Medicine. While some would use that post as a stepping stone to bigger things, Dr. McLain cared so much about medical education that he kept the job and was the longestrunning clerkship director in the country, according to the Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics.

It has been estimated that he taught more than half the doctors that practice in Cincinnati. He also pioneered amniocentesis in obstetrics as a diagnostic tool and introduced interactive group learning as a technique for instruction. Dr. McLain, recipient of the Daniel Drake Medal the highest honor given by the UC College Medicine in 2002, died Jan. 8 of Parkinson's disease at his home in East Walnut Hills.
