B4 TUESDAY, AUGUST 29, 2006 LN MO LOCAL NEWS THE ENQUIRER Lives remembered Dr. Albert J. Vesper 98, N.Ky. surgeon Received Bronze Star for service in World War II By Rebecca Goodman ed setting Enquirer staff writer bones, obstetrics and anesPARK HILLS -Dr. Albert thesia.

J. Vesper Jr. didn't care much As surgery about taking credit for any- became more thing he just wanted to get things done. For example, it wasn't until after he died Thursday morning at Woodcrest Manor in Elsmere that his sons discovered he was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery during World War II. A surgeon with the 24th M.A.S.H.

unit, Dr. Vesper landed on Omaha Beach on the fifth day of the Normandy invasion. His heart went out to the wounded men many of them teenagers that he saw. His only concern was to do the best he could for them, said his son, Dr. Albert J.

Vesper III of Richwood. "Until we were going through the papers I didn't know he received the Bronze Star," his son said. "He didn't care. It wasn't important to him." Dr. Vesper, 98, didn't go to France to distinguish himself.

He only wanted to accomplish what he had been sent to do. Born in Newport on June 30, 1908, he graduated from St. Stephen High School in 1926 and got his undergraduate degree from the University of Cincinnati. He went on to receive his medical degree from the U.C. College of Medicine in 1933.

Dr. Vesper was in his early 30s by the time the United States entered World War II. His son doesn't know if he was drafted or if he volunteered, but he was sure it didn't matter. "The war was there and everybody had to go, so he went." After he received the Bronze Star in February 1945, he was asked by Gen. Grant Wallace, personal physician to President Truman, to become his assistant.

Although realizing that it would look good on his resume, Dr. Vesper turned down the offer because he needed to get home to his family, whom he hadn't seen in three years. Dr. Vesper practiced general surgery with Ed and Joe Northcutt in Covington. At the time, general surgery includ- specialized, Dr.

Vesper foDr. Vesper cused on abdominal surgery. He retired in 1979. When he wasn't working or tending to his family responsibilities, Dr. Vesper bred pedigreed Angus cattle on his farms in Petersburg and Florence.

"He so enjoyed doing the best he could there," his son said. "He was modest. He never wanted to take credit for doing much of anything. He just wanted to get something done." A fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1942, Dr. Vesper was also president of the Northern Kentucky Medical Society and was a member of the U.C.

College of Medicine Alumni Executive Council, serving as president from 1957 to 1958. He was a member of Phi Chi medical fraternity, American Medical Association, Kentucky Medical Association and the Kenton-BooneCampbell Medical Association. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus third degree, Bishop Mulloy Council No. 1301, fourth degree Bishop Flaget General Assembly and St. Agnes Parish in Fort Wright.

His wife, Naomi Cecelia Lee Vesper, died in 2003. A son, James J. Vesper, died in 1981. In addition to his son, Albert III, survivors include: four other sons, Ronald J. Vesper of Petersburg, Paul J.
