A GOLDEN HOME 1. I. C4 WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6, 2005 LOCAL NEWS THE ENQUIRER Lives remembered Gene Walz a pioneer of local television By Maggie Downs Enquirer staff writer As a television producer, Gene Walz was devoted to film the look of it, the texture of it and the feel of it. He resisted the change to videotape, doing so only when film became obsolete. It was this passion for broadcasting that won awards and accolades for the longtime radio and television man.

"He was a very talented, warm individual who made television better in said Bill Myers, who worked with Mr. Walz at WLWT-TV (Channel 5). "He is in no small way responsible for guiding the course of our very earliest days of entertainment." Mr. Walz, 80, of Milford, died Friday after a brief battle with an abdominal disorder. Born in 1925 in Covington, Eugene (Geno) Charles Walz graduated from Holmes High School and the University of Cincinnati.

He began his radio and television career in Cincinnati in the mid-1940s, working for WLW, then WLWT. As an early TV pioneer, he directed shows like "Midwestern Hayride" and "General Store," and was the first director of the Ruth Lyons "50-50 Club." Mr. Walz and wife, Joan, left Cincinnati in 1953 when he became creative program manager for the NBC affiliate, WNBK-TV, in Cleveland. In 1958, he became executive producer, then production manager, at WCKT-TV in Miami, where his crew filmed inserts for NBC programs including "The Today Show." Mr. Walz won two Emmys for documentaries while he was program director of the NBC television affiliate i in Washington, D.C.

one on President Eisenhower and one on air pollution before forming his own production company, said his son, Mark Walz. He returned to Cincinnati in 1969 and worked briefly at WCPO-TV. That year he got a a a a a a job as director of special projects at WCET, where he remained until he retired in 1990. At WCET, he was executive producer of the annual Action Auction. He won an Emmy for a program about Powel Crosley, his son said.

After retiring, Mr. Walz sold cruises. Non-commercial television was "the real thing" for his father, Mark Walz said. Commercial broadcasting limited the freedom to experiment and change but community television allowed one's voice to be heard. Former colleagues remember him fondly.

Mr. Walz was the only person who could find anything among the piles in his office and could easily navigate every reel of film, every book, every sheet of paper in the towers around his desk. "God help you if you ever tried to touch one of his piles," said Jack Dominic, chief operating officer at WCET. "No one else could find anything in there anyway." "He was not at all dictatorial or trying to throw his weight around," said Judy Perkins, who worked with Mr. Walz at WLW.

"He could always see the humorous side of something." Mr. Walz is survived by his wife; his sister, Erma Taylor of Taylor Mill, three sons, Mark of LaFollette, Kent of Dublin, Ohio, and Todd of Maysville, and three grandchildren. His body will be cremated. A memorial service is set for 3 p.m. Friday at the Craven-Riggs Funeral Home chapel in Milford.
