MONDAY, APRIL 18, 2005 LOCAL NEWS THE ENQUIRER Lives remembered Robert Zimmerman, 86, retired from Federated WWII vet also worked at Central Bank, Schonberg By Karen Andrew Enquirer staff writer INDIAN HILL- Businessman Robert Raymond Zimmerman was a man of many interests. In addition to his career in the human resources field, he enjoyed theater, music, art, and traveling. "He was very active in civic and social organizations and had broad interests. He was a great father," said son Marc of Loveland. "He became a woodworker, was an accomplished pianist, built furniture items, put in a pond in our backyard and just a few years ago, learned to do welded sculptures." Mr.

Zimmerman died April 6 at his home. He was 86. He grew up in Duluth, Minn. and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps infantry from 1941 to 1944 when he was commissioned in the Adjutant General's Corps.

He served as a personnel classification and psychological testing officer and a captain with the Army's Fifth Air Force during the early occupation of Japan. In 1947, he attended the Univer- nurse, in 1949. Mr. Zimmerman worked for Continental Can Company of Chicago from 1948-1954 and in the Chicago office of Booz Allen and Hamilton, an international consulting firm in Chicago, from 1954- 65. He joined Federated Department Stores in 1965.

He first worked for Sanger-Harris Department Store in Dallas, Texas, and then at Federated's headquarters in Cincinnati as vice president of organization and planning. He retired from Federated in 1979, but joined Central Bank Corp. that same year as senior vice president for human resources and organization planning. He retired from that job in 1984. But he kept working.

From 1985 to 1993, he worked for Schonberg Associates of Cincinnati, a human relations firm that helps displaced workers get jobs. After retiring for the third time in 1993, he volunteered his time helping unemployed people find new careers. Mr. Zimmerman was a founding member of the Institute for Learning in Retirement at the University of Cincinnati and taught stage and play reading courses. He participated in theater and play reading groups at the First Unitarian Church and was a board member of the Indian Hill Village Stage Reading Group.

In addition to his wife and son, his survivors include another son, Laurence of Reading. A service to celebrate his life will be at 4 p.m. Friday at First Unitarian Church, 536 Linton Street, Avondale. He donated his body to UC Medical Center. Memorials may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union, 4506 Chester Cleveland, OH 44103; Institute for Learning in Retirement, University Of Cincinnati, PO Box 210093, Cincinnati, OH 45221-0093; or the Linton Music Series, 5465 North Bend Road, Suite 337, Cincinnati, OH 45247.

Loving and beloved wife of the late George Everett Cowan, mother of Judy, Carolyn, Rebecca, the late George Dale, Gary and Mark; beloved sister Virgie Charles, six nieces, one nephew, 20 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. A proud daughter of the beautiful and rugged mountains of Eastern Kentucky, the foundation of her fine character was well laid and formed by hard play, hard work, singing and a genuine love of God and his creation, nurtured in the small churches of her youth.

It was here that she "was found" and courted by her beloved George at the age of 18. A year later they married and began a life together that would last just a few months short of 65 years. In the course of those years she raised five children and worked hard to help provide for and educate them. Her jobs included comptometer operator, cashier; finishing out most of her working years as a licensed practical nurse. In retirement she shared many happy times camping, traveling, singing, attending church and visiting with her large family and many friends.

Throughout her adult life it was her fervent desire to read, learn and share the scriptures of the Holy Bible, especially with her children. After the passing of "Her just 29 days ago, it was her frequent and fervent prayer to "Go and be with George" as soon as God willed it. Her prayers were answered.
