ELDEN A. GOOD 2620 ERIE AVE. 871-3433 Florists that's unity for the Democrats," said Kenton County Democratic Party Chairwoman Kathy Groob, a member of the Women's Network. "There's strength in numbers," Groob said. "We're up against a machine, so we're trying to build a machine." Jen Haaga, a Fort Thomas psychologist, is the Northern Kentucky organizer for Change for Kentucky.

She said conservatives have been building their base for years by electing candidates to schools boards, city councils, judicial positions and other nonpartisan races. "There's no reason we can't do the same kind of thing with Democrats who are socially progressive and fiscally conservative," Haaga said. "We want to be able to give those candidates financial support and help with their campaigns." The group formed in February and has about 30 people on its e-mail list, Haaga said. There are issues that are not being given enough attention, such as education and the environment as well as lots of social issues," she said. "We're looking for people that can move up through city councils into state representative or other positions.

"But the Democrats are at a loss for really qualified candidates at this point, and that's something we want to help overcome," Haaga said. Democrats can organize all they like, but Northern Kentucky's conservative voters aren't go ing to abandon Republican candidates, said Will Terwort, a GOP activist from Lakeside Park. The Republican Party will always be the better party because we have the better candidates, the best organization and we're right on the issues," Terwort said. The local Democratic Party can't hide from the national Democratic Party." Elissa Planner, a Women's Network member and university instructor from Camp Springs, said, The pendulum always swings back." This is part of what the network does, to keep the vision strong," Plattner said. Sara Sidebottom, a Crestview Hills lawyer and university administrator who serves on the Women's Network board, said the goal of the groups is to foster true change and not just engage in partisan battling.

"We need to be proactive to meet the needs of veterans and active-duty military personnel," said Covington lawyer Ron Cropper, a founding member of the veterans group. "We see some real issues that need to be addressed and we're looking for the Democrats who can make that happen." Cropper said those issues include increased pay for soldiers, opposition to any proposed cuts in veterans' benefits and ensuring soldiers are properly equipped for battle. As Northern Kentucky's major political parties gird for the 2006 elections, Democrats are emulating the successful Republican tactic of organizing campaign and issue-oriented committees. Three relatively new Democratic groups of women, military veterans and supporters of Howard Dean have formed to promote specific agendas and causes, recruit candidates and elect more Democrats: The Women's Network Advocates for Democratic Principles, a statewide group that grew out of Democrat Lois Combs Weinberg's 2002 challenge to Republican U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell. Democratic Veterans of Northern Kentucky at the Point, an advocacy group for military veterans and active soldiers.

Change for Kentucky, open to Democratic candidates concerned about social issues and fiscal responsibility formed by supporters of Dean, the Democratic National Committee chairman, who ran for president last year. Organizers of the various groups admit the Republicans, who have dominated Northern Kentucky politics for a decade, have been better at organizing. Washington 231-7150 Schools that get jet noise get cooling systems By Karen Gutierrez Enquirer staff writer Three schools in Boone County are getting central air-conditioning on the airport's dime.

This was difficult during warm weather. Classrooms had window units, but they sometimes broke down, and there was nothing to cool the hallways, said Janet Stewart, principal of Goodridge. Now the schools are receiving about $1.9 million each in replacement windows and new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems. After conducting noise studies at the sites, the airport obtained a $9 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to pay for it. Two other schools Conner High School and the Boone County Vocational School will be getting similar improvements.

The FAA grant also covers soundproofing at one school in Cincinnati, St. Aloysius in the Sayler Park neighborhood.
