Two Barge Lines Tell Rate Cuts PORTLAND (UP)- Reductions in motor-water rates of from 20 to 25 per cent for grains from Inland Empire points in Idaho, Oregon and Washington, to Portland, Vancouver, and Longview have been announced by two barge lines. The Portland Freight Taffic Association said the new rates affected wheat, rye, oats, buckwheat, barley, and shelled corn. They went into effect Monday.

The association said the reduction was an effort by Columbia Barge -Lines and Columbia-Snake River Towing Co. to afford grain producers a better break in some of the improvements made along the river such as The Dalles dam. Harry Burnett of The Dalles, traffic manager for the two firms. said it was hoped the, action would induce Congress to speed up construction of John Day dam. "When they finish John Day dam and build the other Snake River dams we can offer some really low rates," he said.

An example of the rate included from Pullman to Longview, old rate. $9.70 a ton, new rate $8.34 a ton. Lilla 540 Alverson Blvd. died Wednesday Services Trinity Episcopal Church Saturday 1 p.m. Private cremation and inurnment View Crest Abbey under Metropolitan Plan Stymied Any possibility of the formation of a Seattle Tacoma Everett Standard Metropolitan Area under that name appears bleak at present, according to word released by Congressman Jack Westland.

Present rules and regulations will not permit the use of the names of the three cities in a standard metropolitan area unless the smaller cities are at least one-third of the size of, the principal city or each has a population of its own of at least 250,000. Inquiring for Congressman Westland, Frederick H. Mueller, assistant, secretary of commerce for domestic affairs, received a statement of the status of the area from Robert W. Burgess, director of the Bureau of Census. Burgess points out these facts and admitted that there had been some exceptions but these were made prior to more recent stringent regulations.

He added, however, that the bureau was considering some new rules which might make a change in this area. It was added; too, that little chance for the formation of a four metropolitan district is seen unless Tacoma makes an official change in its request to the Census Bureau. Tacoma previously had asked that there be no change in the a Tacoma area, not wishing to have the combination. Everett is present setup of a Seattle area and unable to set up its own standard metropolitan area as it has less than 50,000 population. Chief Helton Named Recruiter JOHNNIE W.

City Issues Bid Call For Alverson Job call for bids for the improvement of Alverson Boulevard from the new Norton Avenue overpass to the traffic interchange at Walnut Street and Highway 99 was be made this afternoon by Everett city commissioners: The bid call was set for. a continued council session at 3:30 p.m. Council will open bids March 21. It was indicated that the bid call would be issued on the basis of a 2-1 vote since Commissioner of Safety C. Arvid Johnson has stated that he is against calling for bids on the project until the engineering work has been completed for the improvement of Walnut Stret.

Both projects and the overpass are being financed. by $600,000 bond issue approved by the voters in 1956. Approximately $200,000 has been earmarked for the reconstruction of Walnut Street. Commissioner of Public Works George Gebert said today that work on the overpass itself should be completed within 30 days and he is anxious to have the Alverson Boulevard work completed as soon as: possible. so that the overpass could be put into use with all possible speed.

Gebert said that it had first been the intention of the commissioners let the contract for the Alverson 'and Walnut work at the same time in- hopes of getting a better bid. "Recent talks with local contractors has shown us that we would neither save money nor have to pay more if we let the two projects separately," he said. Johnson said that it has been his experience during recent years that more contractors are attracted to a larger contract than smaller one and that in his opinion the city might get a better price on the work as a whole. Gebert said his department was eager to cooperate vi with labor groups in getting men to work on the project and that letting the Alverson project now would hasten employment. Engineering work on the Walnut work will not be completed for approximately three weeks.
