FRIDAY, 19, 2006 in J. THE ENQUIRER MAY FN LOCAL NEWS Lives remembered Former led Norwood City came through By Rebecca Goodman Enquirer staff writer NORWOOD Joseph E. Sanker, mayor of Norwood from 1983 until 1995, brought the city back from the brink of bankruptcy after General Motors closed its Camaro plant in 1987. "Back in those days, General Motors was everything," said current Mayor Tom Williams. When GM announced the closing, "everybody thought, 'Well, that's the end of Mr.

Sanker put together a task force that guided the city out of its fiscal emergency. "It was a trying time, but he displayed the right leadership and the city pulled through," Williams said. Mr. Sanker died Tuesday at Madeira Health Care Center, where he was recovering from a fall. He was 87.

A Democrat, he served on the Norwood Board of Health and as clerk of council, council-at-large and auditor before running for mayor in 1983. Three years after he took office, GM which employed more than 4,000 people Cops: Car in fatal crash stopped, didn't yield By Sheila McLaughlin Enquirer staff writer ST. CLAIR TWP. An 18-year-old driver in a crash that killed two New Miami High School freshmen didn't run a stop sign as first reported, Butler County sheriff's officials said Thursday. Investigators were still trying to figure out why Steven Roberts, who had four teens in his car, pulled into the path of a pickup truck after stopping while westbound on Morganthaler Road.

The pickup, driven by Thomas Haines, 53, did not have a stop sign while traveling north on Jacksonburg Road. Sheriff's officials were not sure whether charges would be filed against Roberts, Sgt. Monte Mayer said. 4 p.m. crash on Wednesday killed freshmen Cody Ferguson, 16, of New Miami and Josh Blevins, 16, of St.

Clair Township. They were back-seat passengers. Autopsies were being performed Thursday at the Butler County Coroner's Office. Another passenger, Ryan Venable, 16, remained at Miami Valley Hospital, where his condition had improved to serious. Roberts and another passenger, Danni Bradley, 16, were not seriously injured.

Blacks more likely to die in fire than other groups, says CDC By Andrew Welsh-Huggins The Associated Press COLUMBUS Dion Echols and his sister Deanna Pinson were playing by themselves with matches or a lighter in Dayton three years ago when a fire started, killing both. Two factors contributing to their deaths are common in fire fatalities. The house in an older neighborhood lacked working smoke alarms, and both victims were very young Deanna 5 years old, Dion, 3.

Both victims were also blackStatistics show that blacks die in fires of all causes at more than twice the rate of whites, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. From 1999 through 2003, 4,883 blacks died from fire, according to the data, or a rate of 2.63 deaths per 100,000. By contrast, the rate for the 13,755 whites who died during the same time was 1.18 per 100,000. Fire experts blame the higher risk for blacks on poverty, housing conditions and other socio-economic factors. "Fire may just be a barometer of other insults that African-Americans are exposed to at a greater level than other individuals are in society," said Russell Jones, a Virginia Tech psychologist who studies the impact of fire on survivors.

In Cleveland, arson fires killed four young children in April and nine people, including eight children, 11 months earlier, on May 21, 2005. No one has been charged in either crime. All of the victims were black. Many blacks live in big cities, and arson rates are higher in such cities, according to the Massachusetts-based National Fire Protection Association, which researches fires and their causes and creates fire safety codes. A year ago in Trenton, N.J., for example, a 24-year-old black man and his two daughters, ages 7 and 6, died in a fire that authorities said was set in retaliation by gang members.
