LIVES REMEMBERED Prof. Bob Howe loved learning and history By Cliff Radel COLLEGE HILL Certain men of a certain temperament grew up poor during the Great Depression and knew the horrors of World War II, but still managed to see every day as an adventure.

Robert Theodore Howe was one of those men. To the South Fairmount native and former Navy Seabee known simply as "Bob," life was a continuous exercise in learning, pursuing excellence and looking ahead. Mr. Howe deeply appreciated the past. But he did not dwell in it.

He had too much to do in the here and now. At the time of Mr. Howe's death at his College Hill home on Feb. 23 at the age of 90, the professor emeritus of civil engineering at the University of Cincinnati was at work on his memoirs, plus a series of lectures on the history of religion and a manuscript, "How Cincinnati Became Greater," a map laden historical examination of the development of the ninecounty Greater Cincinnati region. "Dad was very place-oriented," said his firstborn child, Barbara J.

Howe of Morgantown, W.Va. "He loved Cincinnati, his hometown. As a civil engineer, he needed to know about buildings and urban planning and highway design. But he also had to know the history of the places where he lived and worked. He wanted to know how they were settled and who lived there." Mr.

Howe's love of Cincinnati led to an involvement in civic affairs during his 37- year career at UC. He ran for City Council in 1963 and 1965. He served on the board of the Southwest Ohio Regional Transportation Authority. "Many of his students went on to work for the city and county," said UC professor emeritus Andrew Bodocsi. "He passed his passion for being exact and his dedication to engineering on to his students.

That is his legacy." The two civil engineering professors had adjacent offices. They also shared a hole in the wall. "We had a common telephone," Bodocsi said. "It sat on a platform at the base of the hole in the wall between our offices. Bob got a kick out of the phone sitting in that hole." "Dad Mr.

Howe loved and appreciated faculty-student contacts," said his daughter. "We had many students over to the house for barbecues and formal teas. My sister Nancy- and myself had to serve at those teas." Mr. Howe saw those events as learning experi- ences. The same went for family vacations.

"Every vacation we would drive, not fly," Barbara Howe said. "Along the way, we would stop and look at every dam, bridge and highway under construction. When we would get bored as only kids can do my dad would say, 'Those things are paying for this At Walnut Hills High School, "I sat next to girls from Hyde Park and Amberley Village," she said. "We lived in Northside. "I used to think: 'The other girls have more advantages than I Then, one day, a classmate told her: "You're so lucky.

You get to travel." Other survivors include another daughter, Nancy H. Bull of Columbia, son, Steven R. Howe of Anderson Township; brother, Walter C. Howe of Golf Manor; sister, Gladys E. Howe of College Hill; and two grandchildren.

His wife, Helen, died in 2006. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Twin Towers Retirement Community's Gulden Community Center, 5343 Hamilton Ave. Memorials: Women's Studies Scholarship Funds for Returning Women Students or the Howe Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund, University of Cincinnati Foundation, P.O.
