Brunsman hhninsinuinfenquirer.com Gus Cianciolo grew up a parishioner of St.

William Catholic Church in West 'rice Hill, played varsity football at Elder High School and helped his dad sell produce from a stand at Findlay Market. Now, he will be buried wilh military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Lt. Gen. Cianciolo died April 4 of injuries suffered when he lost control of a car and hit a tree March 31 near his home in Alexandria, Va.

He was 75. A funeral will be 10:45 a.m. Aug. 31 in Memorial Chapel at Fort Myer, Va. Afterward, a horse with no rider will be led to a grave reserved for the man who flew helicopter gunships with the 1st Cavalry of the Army in the Vietnam War.

A caisson will carry his body, followed by his wife of 52 years, Sheila Cianciolo, and the rest of his family. Taps will be played. Agun salute will be fired by escort troops. And a hero will be laid to rest. Lt.

Gen. Cianciolo received the Bronze Star with the device for valor for his role in repulsing a night attack on a U.S. helicopter base in Vietnam, his wife said. He was a major at the time. They wanted to destroy the helicopters," she said of the enemy.

"He got up in a tower with a sergeant. He had a flashlight, and the sergeant had a gun." The sergeant fired at insurgents, who charged the oerimeter with explosives. The flashlight held by the major guided the sergeant's aim. but it also made the offi-cera target. He was unhurt -and got used to dodging bullets in two years of combat.

"He flew Hueys and Cobras in Vietnam on two tours (WliS-Wi and 1968-69)," his said. "There were incidents when he was flying and a bullet would come right up the cockpit and miss, (but) aviation was his passion." He earned two other Bronze Stars. Other commendations included two Distinguished Service Medals. After more than 33 years as a soldier, he retired from the Army in 1992. Lt Gen.

Cianciolo became senior vice president of Cypress International. He continued as a defense industry consultant with Spectrum Group in 1996, becoming chief operating officer and vice chairman of the board. He was born August Martin Cianciolo on March 11, 1936, in Covington. His mother, Mary Raniero Cianciolo, a Cincinnati home-maker, preferred a hospital in her native Kentucky. His father, Fred J.

Cianciolo, was a Cincinnati native who owned a wholesale produce business and sold Christmas trees. A 1954 graduate of Elder High Cianciolo School, he earned honorable mention on The Enquirer's 1953 all-city football team as offensive guard. "He was tough," said George Aug of Delhi Township, an Elder teammate who later was best man at his wedding. "He was small, not very tall, but a tough competitor." Lt. Gen.

Cianciolo worked with his dad at Findlay Market while a student in the Reserve Officers Training Corps at Xavier University. He entered the Army as a second lieutenant in field artillery after earning a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1958. "He graduated, we were married at St. Martin in Cheviot and a couple months later went to Fort Sill, Oklahoma," his wife said. "We made 25 moves in 33 years." After attending flight school in 1959-60, he became a platoon leader with the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, Ky.

He later earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California. He was the project manager for the Multiple launch Rocket System as a colonel in 1982-83, his wife said. As a major general, he was director of Army weapons systems. He was commanding general of the Army Missile Command, 1988-89; deputy commanding general for research, development and acquisition, 1989-90; and direc tor of the Army Acquisition Corps, 1990-92. During Operation Desert Storm and the Persian Gulf War in 1990-91, "he was the chief of acquisition for the Army, overseeing all the new high-tech equipment," his wife said.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Ten Henderson of Miami Township in Clermont County; two sons, Tony Cianciolo and Marty Cianciolo, both of Alexandria, a brother, Joe Cianciolo of Delhi Township; four sisters, Sue Hautz of Miami Township in Hamilton County, Carol Held of Green Township, Roseanne Brady of Delhi Township, and Diane Hood of Richland, and five grandchildren. Memorials: Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, The Intrepid, West 46th and 12th Avenue, New York, NY, 10036. For consideration in Lives Remembered, send information and contact number to this process. We require all vendors to strictly adhere to the same operational standards and procedures that apply to state-run facilities." Link said privatizing prisons is seen as a quick remedy for states looking to alleviate budget concerns. "While our prison system is undeniably bloated, we must find long-term solutions to stop the flow of people into the system, not gamble on a system that could bring more problems than it solves," Link said.

Link warned that private prison operators become political lobbying forces in states and advocate for policies that will deliver a steady stream of inmates to their business. The DRC owns 31 prisons that house roughly 51,000 inmates. Two prisons are currently operated by Management Training Corp. Ohio is seeking to sell those two prisons as well as three others for about $200 million by the end of the year. com funeral homes VORH19, WALKER 522-6100 com ACLU: Don't sell the prisons By Laura A. Bischoff Dtiytun Daily News COLUMBUS The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio came out on Thursday against a state plan to sell off five prisons and hire private contractors to then house inmates in the facilities. ACLU of Ohio executive director Christine Link said private companies with a profit motive cut corners on staff training, inmate health care and education, and safety policies that often end up costing the state more money in the long run. The group released a 22-page report that details problems with private prisons across the country. State Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokesman Carlo LoParo said, "TTie ACLU's report is more opinion advocacy than scholarly research.
