The couple is survived by their four children: Jim, Barbara, Marilyn and Kimberly, and by 10 grandchildren, all of whom called him "Poppy." A member of the greatest generation, Sgt. Ellis was presented with the U.S. Army's Distinguished Service Award during WWII. Thousands of lives were being saved on the battlefield thanks to a new device Sgt. Ellis and his unit were training medics to use: the portable x-ray machine.

After the service, Bill Ellis put his knowledge of X- radiation to work at General Electric Medical Systems where he sold, installed, and serviced x-ray systems for more than 40 years.
