By Jeff McKinney Jmckitmeyenquirer.com DOWNTOWN Seventy-two local companies are ready to run and walk to help raise money for the 2010 Komen Greater Cincinnati Race for the Cure. One of the region's best-known fundraisers for breast cancer research, this year's event will be Sept.

25 at Great American Ball Park. More than 12,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in a competitive 5K race, a noncompetitive 5K runwalk and a 2K family walk. Companies registered so far have set a goal to raise $133,810 by race day, more than 13 percent of the $1 million overall goal that the Komen Race for the Cure hopes to collect this year. Komen is expecting more than 200 companies overall Huntington Bank to help qualified small-business owners obtain start-up, operating and expansion loans. The downtown-based Cincinnati chapter includes retired and working executives who provide free advice to help businesses open or expand in Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana.

The partnership began last spring and, so far, a salon, a women's boutique and a specialty coffee shop have been approved for small-business loans ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. Three other SCORE referrals are still early in the loan application process, said Chip Bonny, business banking specialist at Huntington's Blue Ash branch. The initiative is a test case for Huntington. It may be expanded to SCORE chapters and Huntington branches in Cleveland and Columbus if it's deemed successful, Bonny said. Launched this month, the alliance will help individuals, businesses and U.S. government entities conduct trade and business transactions with enterprises in India, said Chitra Edwin, the alliance's co-founder. About 14 Cincinnati entities have joined the alliance so far, says Mark Evans, the group's campaign coordinating the campaign. A handful of billboards have gone up around town with the message.

The scholarship will be an annual gift. "I was fortunate to not have to worry about the cost of college, but I understand the importance of a higher education, and this is an easy way for me to help," he said.
