Cowan announces the eleventh anniversary of the opening of the Cowan Building Supply Co., in Algona, :and the first anniversary of the firm's new quarters at 210 East State Street in tjijs city. Until eleven years agoj when the firm first opened on South Dodge Sreet, the principal home service activity was floor re-surfacing. Today, in 1948, the firm has a staff of more than 20, experienced employees and craftsmen, has, outgrown two previous other locations, and now serves home owners Jrt 8 lowq counfies within a radius of 50 miles. ; ' '••:''..'"'• '•'.»•••' ; Mr. Cowan states. that when he started in the floor resurfacing business in 1934, it was brought to his attention in many occupiecj homes that a complete home improvement service was needed. It was a common expression for the homeowner to say that his home was too old, too hard to heat, too |nrf»e, too uncomfortable or unattractive or old-fashioned . ., therefore, not worth modernizing. -.' : > f - ." ; ",..-.' Actually, {ri most cases, the exact opposite was true. Most older homes were perfectly sound structurally, and their existing designs 'lent themselves to modernizing. Mr. Cowan says he saw the need for a "selling job", or education on the value of mod'ernislng and properly equipping existing homes, Such was the inception of the present firm. The paramount idea back of the firm, in 1937 as it is today, was to provide a complete home improvement and modernization service-personalized to fit each particular job. Each home problem received personal attention, and each case has been handled on its own merits. Thus the firm has acquired a unique reputation in this territory of being "home improvement doctors".
