theCincinnati Enquirer BUSINESS Sunday, March 8, 1998 E7 AT&T talking deals with cable TV firms Bloomberg News NEW YORK AT&T Corp. says it is talking to several cable television companies about alliances, which could otter local telephone and high-speed Internet access using cable wires. AT&T Chief Financial Officer Dan iel Somers, though, warned that the telephone company won't pay for the irnpi ovements needed so the cable systems could offer things like phone service. The cable companies are spending billions to upgrade their systems His comments are the latest in the dance between trie cable IV, telephone and technology companies over the next generation of cable, Internet and phone services. Cable industry leader Tele-Communications Inc., for one, says it will take on a partner to help with its telephone effort. "We have developed a good rela tionship with the cable companies," Mr. Somers said. "We are talking to a number of them." While Mr. Somers wouldn't name the companies or expand on the what the alliances would involve, the No.'l long-distance company and the cable industry have been growing closer. The cable industry is in wide-ranging talks with telecom and technology companies eager to use cable's pipeline to sell their products to millions of U.S. homes. Microsoft Corp. invested $1 billion in Comcast in June. TCI and US West's MediaOne Group have said they aren't pursuing direct investments from other companies, preferring joint ventures and agreements to use certain technologies in the digital set-top boxes that will let cable viewers do such things as interactive games and shopping as well as phone service. Mr. Somers' comments suggested that AT&T wants to lend its marketing expertise and brand name to help promote products such as telephone service via the Internet, using cable's high-speed data capability, analysts said.
