Martin 1 0 BY JUDY ASHTON The Cincinnati Enquirer Monsignor Lawrence Walter, former associate editor and business manager of the Catholic Telegraph, died of diabetes Tuesday at his home in Hyde Park. He was 82. Monsignor Walter was ordained a priest in 1939. His first Mass was at the former Our Lady of Grace Church in Price Hill. "He was a very dedicated priest and loved his work at the Catholic Telegraph," said his sister-in-law Helen Walter of Westwood.

He was appointed associate pastor in 1943 at the former SS. Peter and Paul Church in Norwood. He became assistant pastor at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral downtown in 1945. He was appointed secretary pro tern to Archbishop John T.

McNicholas in 1946. 1 In 1947, he became assistant pastor at Holy Name Church in Mount Auburn and associate editor of the Catholic Telegraph. He also served at St. Joseph Church in the West End as assistant pastor in 1949. At the Catholic Telegraph, he rose to managing editor in 1952, overseeing advertising and circulation.

He became business manager in 1954. Monsignor Walter also served at the former St. Augustine Church in West End as assistant pastor from 1959 to 1969, then as pastor until 1972. In 1962, he was appointed papal chamberlain and reappointed in 1963 by Pope Paul VI. He retired from the Telegraph in 1977.

After retirement, he ministered to the Walter de porres award from the Catholic Interracial Council in 1963. He was a member and treasurer of the Mayor's Friendly Relations Commission, now the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission. Monsignor Walter was a graduate of Elder High School, St. Gregory Seminary and Mount St. Mary Seminary.

He received a master's degree in 1941 and a doctorate in journalism in 1943 from the Register School of Journalism at the St. Thomas Seminary in Denver. He is survived by three sisters, Pauline Doerger and Adele Kahny, both of Price Hill, and Ann Beierle of Wyoming; and three brothers, William Walter of Delhi Township, Vincent Walter of Westwood and Cletus Walter of White Oak. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at St.

Peter in Chains Cathedral, Eighth and Plum streets, downtown. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Old St. Joseph Cemetery in Price Hill.

Archibald was born in Portsmouth, OH on September 17, 1909 and lived In Cincinnati, OH for more than 70 years before moving to Springfield In 1990, where she was a resident of Century Pines in Ozark, MO. She was an executive secretary at Cincinnati Builders' Supply until 1948, and a director of the J.H. Archibald Company in Cincinnati from 1949 to 1985. During her years In Cincinnati, she held many leadership positions In the Federated, Groesbeck and Wyoming Garden Clubs, as well as various state and national garden clubs and the Judge's Study Club. She was an officer of the Queen City African Vic-let Society and the National African Violet Society.

Mrs. Archibald also served as president of the Cincinnati chapters of both the Ikebana and the Ikenobo Societies of Japanese floral arranging. Her arrangements won hundreds of blue ribbons, best-in-show and other awards at many competitions locally, statewide, and nationally. She was accredited by the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. as a Master Judge.

For many years she served as a judge of flower arranging at the Hamilton County Fair in Carthage, and at many other maior flower and garden shows throughout the area. She is survived by her son and his wife, Charles and Rosa, Springfield, and a granddaughter, Diane of Colorado Springs, CO. She was preceded In death by her brother, Arnold L. Rice, her husband, James H. Archibald, and her grandson, James H.

Memorials to Hospice of i c4 BY CANDACE GOFORTH The Cincinnati Enquirer Just a few weeks ago, Dr. Edward Kremchek stood shivering in the cold rain on the sidelines of a Moeller High School football game, with an umbrella in one hand and a cane in the other. Despite pain and weakness from the effects of chemotherapy, the sports-medicine orthopedic surgeon was determined to be there for his team. Dr. Kremchek died Wednesday at age 62.

He had had cancer for nine years. "One of his biggest joys was to be able to go to Moeller High School and take care of the athletes. He enjoyed being with the kids. He enjoyed taking care of the kids," said his son, Dr. Timothy Kremchek of Montgomery, who followed his father into orthopedics and now practices with his firm.

Since 1973, the senior Dr. Kremchek had been team physician for Moeller High School athletics. Between 1974 and 1981, he also coordinated sports medicine coverage for the Eastern Hills High School League. Dr. Kremchek graduated from the University of Cincin- Kremchek iate Dr.

Paul Duffy. The two formed what is now Southern Ohio Sports Medicine Centers. He was a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Also surviving are his wife, Ruth Kremchek; three other sons, Scott of Mason, Jeff of Toledo, Ohio, and Daniel of Hyde Park; and eight grandchildren. Visitation will be at 5:30 p.m.

Nepper, who lived in the same Clifton house his entire life, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Monday at Deaconess Hospital. He was 85. He began working for Ah-rens-Fox Fire Engine Co. in the late 1920s. He became chief engineer of the company after receiving a degree in engineering from the University of Cincinnati.

American Demographics, in a story in its October edition, ranked Ottawa Hills 23rd among the country's "101 smartest spots," in an analysis of education data from the 1990 Census. The village population then was about 4,500. "This is obviously a community that places a high emphasis on education," said Marc Thompson, village administrator, when told of the study. "It speaks well for the community.

"The residents are proud of where they live and strive to make it a good place," he said. The study, contained in a story by G. Scott Thomas titled "America's Most Educated Places," ranked cities, towns, villages, townships, boroughs and "census-designated places" according to the percentage of residents ages 25 and older who have bachelor's or higher degrees. Out of 3,066 Ottawa Hills residents in that age group, nearly 70 percent had at least a bachelor's degree. The national average is 20 percent.
