SOCCER Riverhawks win playoff opener Enquirer staff and news services The Cincinnati Riverhawks defeated the Alabama Saints 7-4 in a playoff game Friday night in Jackson, Miss. The Hawks trailed 2-0 with five minutes remaining in the first half when Craig Yaks and Shawn Rockey each scored, tying the game at halftime. "The Saints' offense came out stronger this game and our defense was not mentally prepared," coach Nick Ranieri said.

J.T, Roberts and Yaks each scored two goals in the game. Rockey, Ryan Schaffer and Maurice Schilten scored the other Hawks' goals. Yaks also had three assists to lead the team, The 'Hawks will play the winner of the Lexington Bluegrass Bandits-Jackson Chargers game 8:30 p.m. today for the Mid-South Division Championship. SWIMMING SMITH FAILS IN RECORD BID: Michelle Smith, Ireland's triple Olympic gold medal winner, failed in her bid to break the world short-course record in the 200-meter butterfly in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

In her first competitive race since the Atlanta Olympics, Smith finished in a disappointing time of 2 minutes, 8.15 seconds more than two seconds shy of the record of 2:05.65, set by former.
