Edgar money Mack for a Jr. gave his time, better community FUNERAL HOME NAME TIME He was a partner in the securities and investment firm of Seasongood Mayer. He graduated from the University School, begun in Avondale by Jews refused entrance to existing prep schools, Mr. Mack in 1990 Harrington, whom he hired as president, Mr.

Mack helped turn the faltering institution into one of the most successful private schools in the country. He rode with the Camargo Hunt Club and was a ferociously competitive tennis player well into his 80s. When he and his wife, Elaine, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 1996, they rmde a striking couple. Mrs. Mack wore her original satin wedding gown, and Buddy, as he was known to friends, wore one of his custom-made suits.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine; three sons, Edgar "Ted" III of Mount Adams, and Stephan J. and John both of Indian Hill; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A private family ceremony was held Friday. Mr. Mack was buried at the United Jewish Cemetery in Ev-anston.

Memorials can be made to the CSO Musicians Fund, 1229 Elm Cincinnati 45202 and the Fine Arts Fund, 2649 Erie Cincinnati 45208. BY LAURA PULFER The Cincinnati Enquirer Philanthropist and businessman Edgar J. Mack 89, whose family helped found Hebrew Union College, The Jewish Hospital and other Cincinnati institutions, died Thursday at Jewish Hospital after suffering for years from emphysema. Mr. Mack, the great-grandson of German Jewish immigrants who came here in 1834, chaired the board of trustees of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and served on the boards of Indian Hill High School, Losantiville Country Club and WCET (Channel 48).

He lived in Hyde Park. He was instrumental in opening the Bankers Club to women and African-Americans, and headed the West End Task Force to rebuild that area after the race riots of the late 1960s. Mr. Mack told his children, in a history written for them, "If you wonder why we take the time and energy to do these jobs, it is because of a wonderful ethic in this country that says if you take from the community, then you should return something to it. You get a lot back, and it's a lot of fun." and from Princeton University.

An Army major during World War II, he served five years in Europe and the United States. When his eldest son was to wed in St. Mary Church in Hyde Park, Mr. Mack was invited to meet the priest, who began by asking if "you have any objection to putting your hand on the Bible and swearing to tell the truth." Mr. Mack responded, "I have no objection, Monsignor.

As you well know, my ancestors wrote that book." The cleric roared with laughter, and they became lifelong friends. A man of boundless energy and generosity, he was the first non-Catholic to serve on the board of the College of Mount St. Joseph in Delhi Township. Joseph, OH 45051. Gilligan-Siefke-Grueter Funeral Home serving the Linda Kerns The Associated Press COLUMBUS A breast-cancer survivor whose battle with her insurance company captured statewide attention is celebrating the holidays with a double dose of good news. Medical tests show that Linda Kerns of Columbus has no trace of cancer. In addition, Anthem Blue CrossBlue Shield has accepted her appeal and will pay for her recent bone marrow transplant. "I am thrilled," the 36-year-old said last week.

"It's been what I consider a yearlong battle." Ms. Kerns' medical bills this year have totaled about $275,000, most of which were from the transplant at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital at Ohio State University. It took months for Anthem to agree to pay for the transplant performed in March. The company had claimed a transplant was considered experimental in treating Ms.

Kerns' stage of breast cancer and that her benefits would not cover the procedure. Not everyone agreed. Ms. Kerns' oncologist had recommended the transplant. So did three other oncologists, three bone marrow transplant doctors, a surgeon, a plastic surgeon, Ms.

None was involved in previous decisions on Ms. Kerns' case, said Kendra Over-beck, Anthem spokeswoman. Ms. Kerns said she included her family's breast cancer history, and a promotional brochure from ombudsmen Anthem had used to decide her initial appeal.

The ombudsmen marketed themselves as a way for health insurers to avoid costly litigation, noting that 60 percent of their decisions favor insurance companies. Now with insurance paying for her transplant, she hopes to make the donated money available to others whose insurance will not cover medical treatment. "There's nothing there for somebody who got stuck in the system and needs the procedure to save their life," she said. Ms. Kerns plans to remain active in health-care reform issues by being "a good voice for the little people." Too often people give up on their insurance appeals, she said.
