BY MARGARET A. McGURK The Cincinnati Enquirer Spike Lee doesn't make movies about heroes and villains. He makes moves about human beings.

In Clockers, a murder mystery played out in the constricted world of a housing project drug ring, he has spun a gripping human tale against a familiar backdrop. It looks entirely new in Lee's hands. It is both a violent, urban tale of a young man wedded to evil who is wrenched into salvation, and a riveting suspense story leavened with humor. The movie is elevated above typical inner-city dramas by the strength of novelist Richard Price's story and by Lee's vivid, sometimes breathtaking technique in translating it to the screen. The story follows Strike (Mekhi ey Strike earns buys him no pleasure; his only payoff is fear.

He is despised by his family. The ugliness of his life literally tears him up inside. By the end he is spitting blood. Lee then defies convention again with an ending that suggests redemption, or at least escape, for Strike, for his brother, for Tyrone and for Rocco. As usual, Lee draws fine performances from his cast.

Lindo is a standout. His performance as Rodney sheds the role of the father-figure he plays for his pathetic minions and reveals the brutal killer inside is utterly spine-tingling. Clockers is a tremendous film and a major addition to the work of a vibrantly talented director. der. Rocco (Harvey Keitel), a detective on the case, doesn't believe the confession and obsessively stalks Strike to get the truth.

Strike is driven to the breaking point by an ever-more menacing Rodney and a cop from the housing project called Andre the Giant (Keith David) who is trying to protect a little boy enthralled with Strike. The boy, Tyrone (Pee Wee Love), is drawn into the poisonous web around Strike in a chilling reflection of Strike's relationship with Rodney, until his fate and Strike's are inextricable. Lee stands the ghetto-gangster genre on its ear by stripping away any vestige of glamour from the business of drug dealing. Tower Records will start promoting Enhanced CDs at computer kiosks later this month.

Others haye hit the market, too, under different names like Audio-Vision CDs and i-trax. "I've got all these cool things to do, and I'm going to go ahead," says AIX Entertainment's Mark Waldrep, whose i-trax process was used for discs by Kitaro, Boiled in Lead and Civilization. But at prices higher than music CDs (but less than most CD-ROMs), consumers might sour on the format, Lisa Lewis at Music Marketing Network says. "Within two years, every single disc will have some visual components, even if it's something as simple as a catalog or brochure," says Charly Prevost, a columnist for CD newsletter ICE. But he hopes for bigger and better things, "like handwritten lyrics.

Dylan and Beatles fans especially could appreciate things like that." Stereo owners need not worry about compatibility problems. Enhanced CDs play on regular CD players, unveiling their extra features when put into a PC's CD-ROM drive. Causes of market confusion during this introductory phase: Many releases (Alice in Chains, Mariah Carey, Rolling Stones) were pushed back as Apple, Microsoft, Philips and Sony worked on technical standards. Also delayed: introductory discs from Microsoft (due this fall) and the Recording Industry Association of America Qanuary). Nonetheless, this summer, some discs BY BRUCE HARING and MIKE SNIDER USA Today Slowly but surely, the recording industry is launching what it hopes will be the next wave of entertainment software.

A new form of compact disc, the Enhanced CD (or CD Plus, as Sony and Philips call it) adds computer multimedia to today's music CDs. For example, Bob Dylan Greatest Hits Vol. 3 CD Plus from Sony (due Oct. 10, about $22) includes all the CD's songs plus two videos, a disc-ography, a biographical time line and a lyrics section that transports you to specific songs at a click. "It allows a more expansive look at your favorite artist," Sony Music's Fred Ehrlich says.

Even before the big releases hit this fall, some in the recording industry say Enhanced CDs could make music-only discs obsolete. "If they're going to spend and if they can only use it once and it only gives a discography, are you really going to sell any more than one (per) artist? mm T3 Avoid injuries by removing risks Ouilt Cross Stitch Show Sponsored by Creative Cottage Cincinnati Convention Center Sept. 29th: 10 a.m. 7 p.m. Sept.

Bicycling also involves a risk for injury and is a common cause of accidents in teens. When you're biking, follow traffic laws: Ride with the traffic, not against it. Observe all traffic signs, signals and pavement markings. Use hand signals before turning or stopping. Keep your bicycle in good repair.

Never assume drivers see you; ride defensively. Head injuries are a serious risk when biking, skating, skateboarding and in-line skating. Always wear a helmet, whether you're on streets, sidewalks or bike paths. Make sure helmets meet safety requirements. Common sense and attention to detail can allow teens to enjoy driving, water sports and other activities safely.

Injuries are the most common cause of death or hospitalization for teen-agers. Most of these injuries are preventable. Three of 10 adolescents who die are killed in motor vehicle accidents (cars, trucks, motorcycles). One simple way to stay safe is to wear a seat belt. Seat belts should be worn in every seat, even on short trips.

Driving at a safe speed also reduces risk of injury. One half of motor vehicle accidents involve the use of drugs or alcohol. Alcohol or drugs will delay the driver's reaction time and coordination. If you've been drinking or using drugs, don't drive. If the person you are riding with has been using, find another ride.

Lack of sleep or tiredness are other risk factors for driving injuries. Every driver should consider his or her wakefulness before getting behind the wheel. Drowning is another leading cause of death to adolescents. Avoid swimming or boating alone and don't venture into water beyond your swimming ability.
