Friday, November 22, 1974 THE GAZETTE, EMPORIA, KANSAS Page 7 Auto Layoffs and Ford Price Cut Announced DETROIT (AP) At least H5.000 blue collar auto workers and thousands more white collar employes will be out of work part or all of next month because of mounting production cutbacks in the faltering automobile industry. General Motors said Thursday it will shut nine car assem- bly plants for one or two weeks in December and lay off 30,000 workers because of declining sales. Meanwhile, Ford Motor Co. said it is furloughing 3,000 white collar workers Dec. 1.

Chrysler Corp. revealed plans to lay off white collar workers soon, but would not confirm re- ports that the number would be as high as 15,000. In Windsor, Chrysler of Canada said 1,700 workers will be laid off starting today from Canadian plants which supply parts for the firm's U.S. operations. The latest GM layoffs will mean more than 20 per cent of the industry's hourly work force of about 700,000 will be jobless next month, about 80,000 of them indefinitely.

An additional 20,000 workers have been scheduled for temporary layoffs this month only. Blue collar layoffs next month currently are estimated at 64.200 at Chrysler. 49,000 at Ford and 31.000 at General Motors. GM, which currently has nearly 40.000 hourly workers on indefinite layoff, said workers temporarily furloughed next month will receive full holiday pay for the normal Christmas- to-New Years shutdosvn. In other developments Thursday: announced it has cut off the base price of its subcompact two-door Pinto, which suffered a 37 per cent sales decline in early November.

"There is still much to be done in completing our effort to build a true party organization. However, we made significant progress during the past two years, and I believe for the first time in recent history the party organization svas a genuine factor in the success of the major campaigns." Lewis became executive director of the state party after serving as a consultant in Washington. D.C.. for six months with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. "lt is not normally my nature to leave a job I believe is unfinished and I think there is still another four or five years worth of work to be done to complete our task," Lewis said. "But with Bob Bennett in the governor's chair and his dedication not only to good government but also to an effective party organization, I am confident that the important and necessary party work will be done." Lewis said he thinks success of the Republican party in Kansas this year in major races was a result of three factors. "1 think the decision of the party leadership to establish a professional staff and begin well before the elections was certainly a major and positive factor." Lewis said.

"It was not an easy decision for the party leaders, particularly with the party almost $125,000 in debt at the time." Lewis said a second factor was the quality of the Republican candidates, even in the primary. "In the year of Watergate, we were extremely fortunate that men and women of such high caliber, who have such a deep commitment to responsible government, chose to run this year," Lewis said. He said a third factor was the leadership of the party organization. He named Jack Ranson, state chairman: Marynell Reece, vice chairman: Neta Pollom. secretary: BobOrth, treasurer; McDill "Huck" Boyd.

national committeman. and Beth Rogers, national committewoman. "I hope Kansans realize how much time, effort and personal sacrifice these people have given not only the Republican party, but to the goal of improving state government;" Lewis said. Ranson. in a prepared statement, said, he regrets Lewis' decision to resign and asserted it will not be easy to replace him.

He said Lewis' position with the national party staff potentially means that Kansas will play a major role in the 1976 presidential election. reg 14.87 pair Camel only. Hand whipped moc toe style. Urethane uppers. Tricot lined.
