The program is to be in place for the opening of the 128-bed Wood County Justice Center in 1989, he said. Under the program, inmates would decide whether they want to work, probably for minimum wage, Stevens said. The inmates who work would be charged for room and board, but would have some money left over to spend or to save. Construction of a building to house the program and some of the initial costs could run about $750,000, he said.

"If you don't have the building for that, you'd have to build more cells," he said. "We're trying a different approach." day 5 to 9 P.M. They're worse. We don't want them to leave any worse. "We've found two places (Springfield, and Arrowhead, Minn.) that have this program in place, and they don't have the problems with the kids.

Hopefully, when our kids get out of here, they'll go to a job rather than back into more devilment." He said the two other county commissioners, along with several community groups and agencies, have formed a committee to determine the feasibility of the program. Some of the participants include representatives from the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce, Bowling Green State University and the Wood County Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. The committee will develop a small pilot inmate work program in to Hall-Jordan Funeral Home. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BOWLING GREEN, Ohio Wood County commissioners are considering setting up a prison work program in which inmates could earn a salary, but would have to pay for room and board at the county jail. Commissioner Leonard Stevens said Wednesday the program is designed to ease inmates back into society once their prison terms have ended.

"You have to be led back into society, or you'll never contribute to society," he said. "Most of these people who get in jail are young people. After they get in, no matter how many days they stay, whether it's three, 30, or three years, when they get out they're not as good as when they came in. of Margaret Holzman, William, SHROUT Dora M. Visitation, Friday. more than a year by the Fraternal Order of Police, which said he has provided no leadership. His support among city officials eroded in September when he decided to fire two majors who also had been attacked by the FOP, then reversed the decision. City officials who would not allow their names to be used said Broomfield was given an ultimatum Wednesday by City Manager Richard Helwig and Mayor Richard Clay Dixon to resign or be fired. Dixon refused comment on Broom-field's future when questioned by spectators during the meeting.

About 20 people sang and prayed at City Hall before the meeting. In September, the ministers led about 500 people to protest the majors' firings, which they felt had been forced upon Broomfield. Augman, who is pastor at Mc-Kinley United Methodist Church, said earlier Wednesday that the alliance would attempt to raise $100,000 as "a very clear signal" of support for the chief. 11 A.M. until time of service.

If THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DAYTON, Ohio A group of black ministers opened the door Wednesday to the resignation of the city's first black police chief, Tyree Broomfield, by offering the City Commission a compromise on his successor. Leaders of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance earlier in the day said they would fight for Broomfield and against what they said was a demand by business executives that he step down. "If Chief Broomfield resigns, we would like to demand that the new chief or his assistant be a black person," the Rev. William Aug-man, president of the alliance, told commissioners. "However, if the chief is fired, we will come to you in a different position." After the meeting, Augman said his statement was "a realization that it might happen and there has to be some grounds for negotiation." Broomfield, who became chief in 1983, has been under fire for so desired, memorials may be ices, Saturday, December 5, 1987 at 10 A.M.
