Jeff Goldblum plays Sean, Samuel's best friend and a symbol of the freedom that Samuel fears fatherhood will steal. Goldblum manages to be appealing as a confused, self-indulgent cad. Joan Cusack, as Sean's poster-girl-for-motherhood sister, doesn't get nearly enough time on screen. Tom Arnold, as Gail's boorish husband, gets way too much.

He's acceptable as long as his character is just an annoying loud-mouth. When he's supposed to turn cuddly and lovable, credibility runs screaming into the street. That quibble aside, Nine Months is a fast, funny winner. Hugh Grant might not be lucky, but he is good. MOVIE REVIEW Nine Months y2 (PG13; language, adult themes).

Hugh Grant, Julianne Moore, Robin Williams. 103 minutes. At National Amusements. slapstick and clever dialogue. Grant handles both elements with skill, going from smug to panicked to desperate as the pregnancy progresses.

Moore was a smart choice to play Rebecca. She is as intelligent as she is attractive and, as a character in a vulnerable state, brings backbone to the role. What's the story on Hugh Grant's new movie, Nine Months! In a word: hilarious. There is an old saying that "it's better to be lucky than good." Last week, Grant was neither. His famous bad behavior with a Sunset Strip service provider hurled him into the maw of the worldwide tabloid mill just as Twentieth Century Fox was launching a huge publicity drive for Nine Months. The picture, based on a French comedy of the same name, was meant to cash in on Grant's smash success in last year's Four Weddings and a Funeral. That movie sailed all the way to an Academy Award nomination, largely on Grant's fine comic acting and self-effacing sex appeal.

Lucky for us, Nine Months does its job. Here's an almost infallible measure on the funny meter: The audience laughs so hard that you can miss some of dialogue. Nine Months is like that. The story is simple. Grant plays Samuel, a child psychologist who goes nuts when his girlfriend Rebecca (Julianne Moore) unexpectedly becomes pregnant.

He pouts, whines, throws tantrums; she gets fed up and leaves. He finally decides he wants to be a dad and goes about getting her back. Complexities intervene before everyone winds up in the delivery room.
