But these people haven't watched 11 seasons worth of Knots Landing, including the 300th episode airing tonight (10 p.m., Channels If they had, they'd know that fiction, in weekly doses and with the cast of characters living on Seaview Circle, can be much, much stranger than anything that happens to real people.

It's not that strange things don't happen to real people. But the folks in Knots Landing have awful karma. Take poor Karen Fairgate Mackenzie (Michele Lee), a character who, to all appearances, has done little to deserve her lousy luck. She's been married, widowed, married again, addicted to drugs, kidnapped, imprisoned, shot at and harassed by a psychotic fan of her talk show. In between Karen's bouts of misfortune, she's had to be the community Pillar of Strength, comforting her even more unfortunate friends and relations.

Yes, more unfortunate. Because in Knots Landing, if you're still alive, you're darn lucky. This show has a 300-episode body count that rivals most cop programs. But while its characters may have short life spans, the show itself is one of the longest in television history. Among one-hour dramas, only Dallas (13), and Bonanza (12) have lasted longer.

For those who've had better things to do with their Thursday nights between 10 and 11, this might seem strange. But for fans, many of whom tune in faithfully or tape the show, the story isn't to be missed. And that might just be the key to Knots' success. The show is able to give viewers all the suspense and human pathos of daytime drama but it takes ever so much less time to do it. This often means that, if a story line is a bore, the producers can get out of it quickly and take the fans with them.

Also helping the show succeed is its firmly entrenched, middle-class status. While night soaps such as Dynasty and Falcon Crest were filled with land barons TV highlights Evening 8:00 (5) (22) Cosby Show: When Theo counsels at a community center he gets an unexpected reaction from the kids. Knots of luck: Tonight is the 300th episode of Knots Landing (10 p.m., Channels 9, 7), which premiered Dec. 27, 1979. If you're keeping score at home, it's the fourth-longest running prime-time series in TV history behind Gunsmoke, Dallas and Bonanza.

Gone with the wind: Folks at WRBZ-FM (107.1 mHz), which switched from light jazz to hard rock last week, were stunned to receive 140 protest calls about the new format. The station switched music because continual low ratings indicated that few people listened. Often nobody called when the Breeze announced a contest give-away, says Scott Allen, music director. Long shadow: NBC has received more than 50,000 letters and calls in support of renewing Dark Shadows, the Los Angeles Daily News reports. Fan clubs in New York, Los Angeles and a dozen other cities plan to picket their local NBC affiliates at 4 p.m.

One of their number is even about to become homeless, when her latest business venture fails. It also hasn't hurt Knots that it still has the same time slot. With the exception of a short stint in late 1981 and early 1982 when it aired at 9 p.m. Thursdays, Knots has held on to 10 p.m. since its debut in December 1979.

So what will it take to for Knots to follow its parent soap Dallas (series finale is May 3) into that great graveyard of syndication and cable reruns? Cast defections, firings and fadeouts don't appear to faze the show. Currently a solid 33rd in the Nielsens, the show shows no signs of plot burnout. True, its core couple Gary and Val (Ted Shackelford and Joan Van Ark) are still on the show. But what will happen if they leave? What if their impending third trip down the aisle together ends in nuptial bliss? Never happen. For Val, a long-term commitment means from one commercial break to the next.

Gary, the thrice wed, alcoholic little brother of J.R. Ewing, isn't much better. Fans needn't worry. As long as Knots writers can keep spinning their tawdry tales of sex, murder, and marital mayhem, the fantasy continues. ating; a "roast" is in the works for Walter.
