Candidates for two board seats Nov. 5 include Patricia Hoegeman, Charles Knotts, Kenneth Kreuter, Tim Leigh, Danny Stacy and Gay Thompson. Board member Bill Loughrey said Sanders' appointment was a "logical thing to do." "She does a lot of volunteering in the community and she's very interested in our schools," he said. "We didn't feel like we should appoint a (candidate) who was running. That would be unfair." Three Rivers superintendent Richard Scherer agreed. "She's put in a lot of time for the students and we thought it (appointment) was only appropriate," he said. Recently she became a paid worker at least through December. Sanders, whose husband, Robert, died last month, was unanimously appointed by the board last week to serve the remainder of her spouse's term. Robert Sanders, 64, died of cancer in his Miami Heights home Sept. 16. He had not planned to seek re-election in November. "I was very honored and very humbled that they asked me to do this," Betty Sanders said. She has been a school volunteer for 40 Robert Sanders Betty Sanders years and is treasurer of the Three Rivers Tax Levy Committee. "I've listened to shop talk from other educators, so I think I have almost as much knowledge as anyone else. I'm going to give it a whirl. And I've never been known to keep my mouth shut." It was a typical American rite for many youngsters, but it must have stuck with him. Not only is the 27-year-old Indiana resident a full-time firefighter for Green Township, but he also recently graduated at the top of his class in mandatory training at the State Fire Academy in Columbus. Douglas scored the highest out of an original 20-member class; three dropped out before the course ended. The 200-hour course is required of all full-time recruits and includes rigorous academic and physical training. "You had to do things like search and rescue," Douglas said. "I had my mask taped up so I couldn't see and I had to go in and search for a 250-pound dummy and drag it out within 10 minutes. I did it in 4 minutes, 51 seconds." Douglas also had to set up a 24-foot ladder, climb it to touch a window sill, disassemble the ladder and put it back on the pumper truck within an allotted time. He had to tie ropes for hoisting, assemble large water hoses and endure scrupulous inspections of his firefighting equipment. Douglas had been a part-time firefighter for the township for about two years until he was sworn in full-time in August. The five-week training course was held from Sept. 2 to Oct. 4. Firefighting always his goal For Douglas, being a firefighter was always a goal, even after he graduated in 1986 from the University of Evansville and began working as a communications consultant. At the same time he was a part-time firefighter with the Greendale Fire and Life Squad in Indiana. Then early one morning in 1989, fire broke out at a lumber plant in nearby Lawrenceburg, Ind. Douglas was there, helping to fight the blaze for hours, and was exhausted by the time he was to leave for his other job. "That's when I knew I had to make a choice" between jobs, Douglas said. Green Township Fire Chief Bob Weitzel praised Douglas and other firefighters for their accomplishments during training. "Anybody we've sent up there (to the academy) always at least came out in the top five in the class," Weitzel said. "It's something to be proud of. It makes me proud to be their chief." 'It's a brotherhood' As for Douglas, being a firefighter has a deeper meaning. "It's hard to describe the feeling to go in and face a fire which you know can engulf you at any time," he said. "It's a challenge. And it's (firefighting) a brotherhood for the people that do it, because it's such a unique job. The people are living together 24 hours at a time here every three days. You become like family, and there are not many jobs where you get that feeling." COUNTRY SOFA high back design, 100 nylon cover, side pillows.
