Chester 874-7978 Volleyball tops at Mount St. Joe BY TERRY FLYNN The Cincinnati Enquirer The College of Mount St. Joseph volleyball team won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) District 22 crown last season. With the district tourney at the Mount's Delhi Township campus this year, the Lions are a favorite to repeat. "We were one game away from going to the (NAIA) national tournament last year," said third-year coach Mary Ann Broderick, recalling the Mount's loss in the tournament in Michigan. "I'd like to see us go to the nationals this time," she said. Broderick has five starters returning from last year's squad, and those veterans are aided by some talented local freshmen. "The freshmen can learn from the veterans, and the freshmen are challenged by the play of the veterans," said Broderick, a Price Hill native who played volleyball at Se-ton High School and the University of Cincinnati. Seton grad Karen Cummings, a freshman outside hitter from Price Hill, has figured prominently in the Lions' 22-2 record, good first-place in the district race. College play differs "College (volleyball) has been more fun than high school," Cummings said. "The offense is a little faster in college, and I'm just getting used to it. But there are a lot more people at the college level who really want to play." Cummings, a GGCL (Girls Greater Cincinnati League) first-team selection a year ago, said the Lions are a "strong team, and it's a close team. We pull together." Freshman middle hitter Kathy Hentz of Delhi Township, an Oak Hills High School graduate, said she thinks the volleyball competition at the college level is "more intense than high school. And there are better players at all positions." Hentz was a major contributor in Oak Hills' district championship last year, and, ironically, her friend at the Mount team, Kathy Cum- Apartments Unfurnished 225 CARTHAGE -1-2 bdrms, $295-$325 utilities. 961-3706 LIVE-IN-Carlng housekeeper needed for Indian Hill home w3 children. "We won our district, and then we lost to Seton in the regional (tournament)," Hentz said. Broderick, who was the volleyball coach and athletic director at McAuley High School for seven years before coming to the Mount, said the team's seniors "set a series of high goals before the season started. I think that may have surprised some of the freshmen." But Cummings said the goals didn't bother her. "Since this is my first year, I don't look at what happened last year. I'm concerned with winning this season." Added Hentz, "The seniors are probably pushing harder to win the district again, because they were here last year and they've been through it. Call 677-8851 Local man wins 1,000-mile race BY ALICE HORNBAKER The Cincinnati Enquirer Tom Possert of Hyde Park has won a 1,000-mile endurance race in New York, finishing 12 hours ahead of the nearest runner. Possert, 28, earned more than $2,000 for the Hyde Park Center for Older Adults through pledges from friends and admirers. Ten competitors began Sept. 19 in Queens and ended there two weeks later. Pos-sert's time was 13 days, 14 hours, 2 minutes, 52 seconds. He crossed the finish line at 2 a.m. on Oct. 2, he said. "The race was just something I had to do," he said. A co-owner with Debra Moore of Hyde Park's Victoria Inn bed and breakfast, Possert said he appreciates the support he has received from Cin-cinnatians. His sponsor was Chiquita. The biggest problem he encountered during the grueling run, he said, was having to stop 16 hours to rest due to shin splints. "But the next day I ran 89 miles, so I made up that lost time," he said.
