"In a way, it's hard having everybody's opinion. You have to re-learn, the way you sort of did in your family, how to really fight for what you believe in and not give in to everything. Sometimes our rehearsals are very difficult because of that," says Wallace. Even when things don't work so smoothly, they don't pretty up the process. Nor the finished work. "We're not looking for perfection onstage, we're looking for reality, for truth. I don't mind rough edges in theater. What I'm much more concerned about is being moved, being affected." This weekend, the company shows the seeds of these ideas when they present four works from the early to mid-1980s, and one created as you watch. For the Cincinnati company distinctively named movement, music and ... , it's jazz. It's not a specific piece of music that inspires them, nor a particular style. This company is founded on the way that jazz works: democratic, independent, and impro-visational. Most dancers work in what can best be described as benevolent dictatorships. There's a choreographer who makes all the decisions, and dancers who abide by them. For the most part, it works the artistic process is chaotic enough without having to worry about whose say is final. But six years ago, choreographer Cheryl Wallace began to compare what her dancers were doing to what her musicians were toward traditional dance "movement" recently, these older works are big and dance-y. They're also landmark pieces for the company. For instance, Wallace calls On the Steps of the Conservatory, her "talking breakthrough," which paved the way to using the whole body including talking, singing and acting as instrument. Cincinnati may remember some of the works, having been germinated under Cheryl Wallace Dance Works, based here from 1982 to 1985. Since then, the artists have moved, hopping from city to city throughout the state, and performing in New York City and in Ohio. Clark is still based in Cleveland, and the rest of the company in Cincinnati, but the collaboration continues. When musicians Billy Larkin and Chris Dahlgren weren't accompanying her dances, they could (and still can) be found anywhere in Cincinnati knocking off improvi-sational jazz duets. "I became very interested in the relationship that Billy and Chris had as jazz impro-visers the trust and the faith that they have in each other and the ability to communicate without saying, 'Now let's do this . . .,' " says Wallace. "I wanted that faith, that trust; I wanted whatever it was that they had." Since there wasn't an equivalent in the movement world, she made one. The result is the four-way collaboration called movement, music and . . . Wallace, Larkin, Dahlgren and dancer Colleen Clark realized that the old format of one person at the top wasn't going to work for the democratic issues they wanted to Coppola to take bite out of Dracula legend , i Pf,w. r.w; Vff" .J HC-A X --'LI fl o ENQUIRER NEWS SERVICES Bram Stoker's Dracula which is really Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula gets under way this week on the same LA sound died down the Transylvania turnpike.
