While geometric-patterned and Southwestern style sweaters have been popular for several seasons, designers continue to develop new versions. Other new patterns mimic stained glass, mosaics and patchwork. There are abstract versions of autumn leaves, florals, argyle plaids and houndstooth plaids, such whimsical conversational patterns as winter landscapes, casinos and farm animals and bulky heavily-cabled turtleneck, crew neck and cardigan styles. "You'll see three or four types of cables on one sweater to create surface interest," says A. Scott Greene, manager of Jos. A. Bank Clothiers in Kenwood. Subdued colors like olive, burnt orange, plum, burgundy, teal, chocolate, caramel and copper dominate the market. While most sweaters are cotton, as the weather gets warmer there will be combinations of cotton with wool, mohair or chenille or all-wool styles. An informal survey of several local men's clothing shops and department stores indicates that V-neck styles are becoming popular again while crew neck styles in such solid colors as olive, teal, brown and rust are selling the best. Sweaters range from $35 for simple cotton styles to $150 or more for hand-knit or all-wool designer styles. ; MARY BETH CROCKER Abstract boomerang cotton sweater from Tony Lambert. iMimim-iCtpffifl .16 Hgrt-M A 11 R theit oNn-'fhe U I V J dUeconol Coses l -I W0cQes33A.
