B-6Television mn Cincinnati enquirer Monday, October u, 1991 Monday morning edd Foxx's career ended on upswing Comedian saw sitcom as new start John 'i T JU Kiesewetter Television t2 Mir Jbd Redd Foxx was back on top of the heap. The popular Sanford & Son junkman, who died Friday at rehearsal for his CBS The Royal Family sitcom, had finally found some gems in his recent troubled times. Foxx, meeting with TV critics last July, had married for a fourth time a few weeks earlier in Las Vegas, where he had packed the Hacienda Hotel for 19 months, and had a new network TV series to ease his $3-million IRS debt. He announced his nightclub retirement to concentrate on his CBS sitcom with Delia Reese about Alphonso Royal, a mailman whose quiet retirement was disrupted by his daughter and three grandchildren. The Royal Family, ranked 40th, gave CBS its best 8 p.m. Wednesday ratings in recent years and helped CBS sweep the first three weeks of fall. (CBS executives must be wondering when their bad luck will turn around with the deaths of Foxx and Michael Landon, and the probable baseball playoffs' ratings loss to the dramatic Clarence Thomas hearings.) Foxx displayed his blunt style, found on 55 adult "party" record al-bantering with reporters bums, about his 1Kb woes. Why do another TV series? "Grand-theft bucks," he said. Are his IRS troubles over? "No, would you like to contribute?" said Foxx, who earned $10,000 a week in Vegas in 1960. Foxx answered several questions with no words, relying instead on the facial expressions often seen on Sanford. (My favorite was the time he shot bolt upright in bed from a deep sleep when a radio played the popular 1970s song, "Fred Is Dead.") His fatal heart attack Friday could have been a scene from Sanford, where he frequently clutched his chest and faked a seizure. Joking to the end "They were rehearsing" on the set and clowning around, and Redd was sort of breaking people up when he collapsed," show publicist Rachel McCallister told the Los Angeles Times. "They all thought he was joking around at first, and then they called paramedics." Foxx will be buried in Las Vegas, where he left 'em laughing for three decades. Monday afternoon Childhood (8 p.m., Channel 16; 9 p.m., Channels 48): First of seven weeks: PBS examines how children develop in 12 families on five continents. American Experience (9 p.m., Channel 16; 10 p.m., Channel 48): You've seen the movie Glory. Now watch the PBS documentary about the 1863 "Massachusetts 54th Colored Infantry." Around the cable dial: A VCR alert: Rich Man, Poor Man: Book One, the 1976 ABC miniseries, repeats today through Wednesday on cable (8 and 10 p.m., TNT) . . . Kenny Rogers sits in for host Ralph Emery on Nashville Now (9 p.m. today, Nashville cable) . . . Kiese-watching: Were you glued to the Senate Judiciary hearings, too? I spent the weekend eating, sleeping, even mowing the lawn with Clarence Thomas. Fascinating drama! Nothing compares to having history delivered as it happens by TV or radio into your home or car! Election forum: Cincinnati Community Video and the League of Women Voters air live call-in election forums 7 p.m. today and Tuesday on Warner Cable's public access Channel 7. Radio waves: Charlie Carey repeats a 1986 studio concert by the late Dee Felice and his Sleep Cat Band at 7:30 p.m. today on the WVXU-FM (91 .7 MHz) Story Of Jazz Laura Steele from Indianapolis moves into the 6-10 p.m. shift on WOFX-FM (94.9 MHz) today. She replaces Ali Katz, who resigned last month . . . Jerry meets Sally: The table is turned on talk show host Sally Jessy Raphael, who's Jerry Springer's guest today (10 a.m., Channel 5). Other Springer topics: Women addicted to telephones on Tuesday; mothers of quadruplets, Wednesday; overweight children, Thursday; and stay-at-home moms versus working mothers on Friday. The Enquirering Mind: An Enquirering mind wanted to know: Will Maggie (Janine Turner) really meet the spirit of her late boyfriend in a dog on Northern Exposure (1 0 p.m. today, Channels 9, 7)? "She will interact with the dog, definitely," co-executive producer Andrew Schneider told TV critics last summer. "But we haven't cast the dog yet. The dog's asking for a lot of money. It's a problem." JOHN KIESEWETTER Tomorrow," (puberty and adolescence). The series shows many universal moments around the globe the first day of school, riding a bike, and parents refereeing their kids' Nintendo disputes. A recurring theme is "the progressive hecticness of American family life," says Urie Bronfen-brenner, one of Childhood's six on-camera experts. Bronfenbrenner told TV critics last summer that a European colleague had observed during a U.S. visit: "I had not known that in your country most children are being brought up in moving vehicles." JOHN KIESEWETTER inhaling on an ever-present ciga- rette during a Universal Hilton press conference July 25. "I've already told (Hacienda managers), you know, that I'm retired for a while from Las Vegas. Series success "I'll just need all of my time here, in my age now. I need all the rest I can get!" If age had slowed him down, it wasn't apparent that day. He talked and walked as fast as he did nearly 20 years ago as NBC's Sanford (1972-77). During the press conference, he often held hands with co-star Reese. Their 40-year friendship provided that distinctive regal touch to The Royal Family which network executives call "chemistry." Seeing Foxx and Reese carry on while shooting Harlem Nights, inspired comedian and producer Eddie Murphy to created the CBS series for them. "Redd and I got into a conversation," Reese explained, "that amused Eddie and had him laughing. And he said, 'This is a television show!' And he went immediately into his dressing room and began to write scenes for us." PBS looks at PBS went around the world in 18 months to observe Childhood in 12 families on five continents. The result is television's most thorough examination of child development in a seven-week series starting today. Childhood premieres at 8 p.m. on Dayton's Channel 16, and 9 p.m. on Channel 48. "We wanted to be cross-cultural," said co-executive producer Geoffrey Haines-Stiles from PBS' Cosmos series. "We wanted the series to essentially say there's no one way of making human beings, there's no one right way to raise your children," he said. Childhood tracks families in the Monday overnight worldwide child development United States, Japan, Brazil, Cameroon and the Soviet Union. "We look at their daily lives, the ups and downs, thus showing us some of the principals that are universal, and some of the distinctive features that make us an individual," he said. After tonight's "Great Expectations" introduction, the series will analyze development by age at birth with "Louder Than Words"; "Love's Labors," ages 1-3; "Ties That Bind," ages 3-5; "Life's Lessons," ages 5-7; "Among Equals," (sixth grade); and "The House Of 9:00 PM S The private life of the public legend!
